Consider all the picture books you’ve ever come into contact with–past and present.  Which of them, in your view, presents the most compelling illustrations? Do the illustrations/images transcend the textual components of the text and invite readers to immerse themselves in ways that the text simply cannot do?

Some points to consider:

What do the images reveal–beyond what they depict?  In The Widow’s Broom, sure, it’s a woman in pumpkin patch, but doesn’t it invite us to rethink witches, femininity, etc.?  
What tone(s) do the images convey? 
How does the illustration make the reader(s) feel?
