Historically, photography was understood to record reality objectively, freeze time, and document fact as opposed to the constructed, subjective, fictive nature of painting. With the use of photoshop and other means of embellishing photographs and videos, the given that photography and lens-based media represents the world as it is–has evaporated.
Is there a gain or a loss to the proximity of the factual and fictional that painting and photography now occupy? How could painting benefit from its dependence on subjective creation given the change in our understanding of photography, not as factual, but rather as a fugitive media currently?
