Case Study 2Bill is a currently sober, mid-thirties male, with a history of lifelong alcohol use and a family history of alcoholism. Counseling was initiated for the client by the wife, who was concerned with her husband’s frequent late arrivals at home, and being intoxicated. When he is intoxicated, he is verbally abuses his wife. The client is a “functional alcoholic”. Despite his alcohol abuse, he goes to work, provides financially for his family, and serves weekly in his local Church. The client has been attending Alcoholics Anonymous for 2 weeks and had one prior short unsuccessful exposure to AA a decade plus before. The client had previously withdrawn from his marriage by resorting to alcoholism. The wife has previously withdrawn from this marriage by distancing from her husband, nagging about the alcohol abuse and lack of relationship with him, and having total control over the couple’s only child. When he comes to see you, he states he wants to do well and reconnect with his family.
