After reading the “Be Here Now” Power Process, (“Beyond time management” Page 94 – 95) dedicate one entire day to observing where you place your attention. How often are you fully aware of what you are doing, while you are doing it?
Note the number of times in an hour that your attention wanders from the task at hand. For example, keep track of your thoughts while you are eating.
Are you tasting the food, enjoying the smell and textures, or are you thinking about being late, problems in a relationship, and so on?
How often do you arrive somewhere by car and have no memory of the scenery or landmarks you passed on the way?
How often do you “space out” in class and not really hear a lecture for several minutes?
Or how often do you find that while reading, 15 minutes have gone by, and although you’ve been turning the pages, you have no idea what you just read?
The average “focused” attention span is about 10 minutes. After that, our thoughts drift into daydreams. This obviously affects how much we perceive, learn, and remember. Paying attention takes energy. If our energy is not consciously guided back to what we intend to do, our success at accomplishing what we are trying to do is reduced.
The first step to improving your attention span is to develop an awareness that your attention is wandering in the first place! Then you can intentionally choose to refocus your attention on the task at hand.
Please share some personal techniques you have developed to keep your attention focused, and discuss what you have learned about yourself from doing this exercise.
