This assignment challenges you to affect public policy formation beyond your day-to-day job. An important way you can do this is to write a powerful Op Ed about your own chosen public policy/ public administration topic. Given that most of the program has focused on longer research papers, this assignment will challenge you to identify, analyze, and “solve” a public policy issue in a way that can be easily communicated through shorter writing.
Identify a public policy issue that you believe is a significant challenge in the United States. This is your opportunity to really dig into a topical area that is important to your career or personal interest.
Review the Op Ed slides that are posted to our course site.
Write an Op Ed incorporating the learnings from the class slides. At the top of your piece, you should identify a potential outlet for your work.
Your written work should be around 800 words. Pay attention to the inclusion of graphics, tables, and figures as you see fit (or not). Also pay attention to the use of weblinks to cite your source or prompt readers to follow the trail to other relevant articles.
Analyze the policy issue, formulate an improvement plan/ recommendation, and communicate it effectively in the Op Ed. You should pay particular attention to bringing in the material, policy analysis skills, and evidence-based public policy-making ideas of this program into your writing. Your piece should be persuasive because it leverages the tools you have gained in the program.
Highlight how others should look at the policy area that they might not have realized. Provide rigorous support for your recommendation.
