ENGL 1010: Literacy for LifeSmall Writing 2: Genre MapPROJECT PURPOSESmall Writing 2: Genre Map serves as a prewriting and/or invention strategy for Writing Project 2: Genre Analysis. A genre is a type of media (text image, sound, video game, software) that is characterized by a particular purpose, style, form, audience and context that respond to particular rhetorical situations. We talked about the relationship between literacy, genre, and the rhetorical situation during our class lecture notes from Week 2. This small writing project will help you develop your understanding of genre and begin to consider how you’ll approach a formal genre analysis.PROJECT DESCRIPTIONLocate a GENRE that is specific to your academic discipline or career choice. For example, if you’re majoring in business, you might choose an executive report. If you’re a scientist, you might choose a lab report. If you’re planning to be a teacher, you might select a lesson plan. Your Genre Map should be 250-500 words long and contain a description of all 5 aspects of a genre: 1) Purpose, 2) Style, 3) Form, 4) Audience, and 5) Context. Your final product should look similar to the examples we’ve done together in the ENGL1010: Genre Glossary.WRITING PROCESSThe writing process for our major writing projects occurs in 5 phases: Invention, Drafting, Revision, Editing, and Publication. We talked about these phases during the Week 3 Tuesday Talk. Our small writings serve as invention and/or drafting strategies for the major writing projects. So, your writing process for the genre map will be shorter and more focused.
