In 1918, there was an Influenza Pandemic and it was called the Spanish Flu, although it was not determined to have originated in Spain. The virus was initially detected in military personnel and it spread globally to an estimated 500 million people or over one-third of the world’s population. The government had to close all public institutions, theaters, businesses, salons, and dance halls. Citizens were ordered to wear masks. When all seemed well, there was a second wave of the virus that killed more than the first wave. There was an estimated 50 million worldwide deaths. The government had to become super rigid in regulations to protect the general public. The second wave was thought to have been caused by the continual movement of the military troops while most remained quarantined.
