After being discharged from the hospital/transitional care unit they may continue to have physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy in a home care setting (Workman, M.L.,2021). For someone who has a mild case they can recover at home with discharge plans such as taking acetaminophen for headaches as needed, avoid sedatives, sleeping pills, or drinking alcoholic beverages with 24 hours of discharge, do not participate in strenuous activities for 48 hours, watch for ambulation safety and gait disturbances. Immediately bring the patient back to the ER is they exhibit any symptoms such as seizures, severe or worsening headache, persistent or severe nausea and vomiting’s, clear drainage from the ear or nose, blurred vision, increasing weakness, slurred speech, progressive sleepiness, or unequal pupil size. All of these could be signs of a more severe TBI and complication such as the leakage of cerebral spinal fluid from the brain and requires immediate attention.
