Network  written by Paddy Chayefsky and directed by Sidney Lumet
“Television will do anything for a rating… anything!” – Paddy Chayefsky
R rated Network is the compelling story of the Union Broadcasting System, a failing television network whose ratings are plummeting and it is about to go out of business.  The movie stars Faye Dunaway, William Holden, Peter Finch, and Robert Duvall.  Also featured are Wesley Addy, Ned Beatty, and Beatrice Straight.
The movie won four academy awards including Best Actor, Best Actress, Best supporting Actress and Best original Screen Play.  Additionally, the movie won four Golden Globe Awards including Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director and Best Screenplay.  Network currently holds a 92 percent “Fresh” rating by Rotten Tomatoes.
Network is a dark satire focusing on Howard Beale, a newscaster whose time has come and gone.  After a career of 25 years Beale suddenly rises to fame due to a near mental breakdown on the air.  The movie is best known for one line, “I’m as mad as hell, and I’m not going to take this anymore!”  There are many twists and turns in the movie.  Listen carefully to Mr. Beale’s rants and you will be surprised as to how prophetic the movie was and is, even in 2021.
Your assignment is to watch clips of the movie, and then to prepare a paper on the movie and highlight three communication theories you identified in the movie clips.
Movie Review and Analysis Style Sheet (How to write your paper)
Spelling, punctuation, and grammar all count.  Papers that present your original thoughts and well supported opinions about the communication theories in the movie will be more highly valued than those who simply regurgitate the contents of the textbook.  Do not include quotes from the textbook in your paper.  Don’t tell me the story, I already know that; I want to read your interpretation of the movie and application of the communication theories you have chosen.
