Nurse Practitioner: Roles and Responsibilities
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) role is an outstanding career because of the wide scope of practice accorded to it. The scope of practice of an NP is unique compared to other health professions. In practice, an NP plays an advanced role due to the acquired clinical competencies, skills in complex decision making, and expert knowledge base for expanded practice (Woo, Lee & San Tam, 2017). Besides, NPs only enter the employment arena after undertaking a postgraduate training program. Therefore, they are outstanding when compared to other health professionals since they are equipped with a wide body of knowledge, and are capable of providing an extended scope of care, ranging from primary to acute care.Â
The role of a family nurse practitioner (FNP) is to provide a wide scope of family-centered care to patients. An FNP provides an extended range of family-centered care services to individuals at all life stages, including the elderly, adults, adolescents, and infants (AANP, 2019). The practitioner acts as a link between patients and physicians, including documentation of patient data. The responsibilities of an FNP include diagnosis, evaluating medical history of patients, and chart their data. An FNP is also allowed to prescribe medication in some states without supervision by a physician.Â
The eligibility for certification of an FNP includes a registered nurse (RN) license and a doctoral, post-graduate, or master’s degree. The RN license should be current and active in a United States territory or is professionally and legally recognized in another nation. The family nurse practitioner program offering the doctoral, post-graduate, or master’s degree should be accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (ANCC, n.d.). The program should contain 500 clinical hours supervised by the faculty with distinct units in advanced health assessment, pharmacology and pathophysiology. The content of the graduate-level courses must be differential diagnosis and disease management, along with promotion and maintenance of health.   Â
