Assignment 1:
Objective: Students will (a) conduct a 15-20 minute interview with a person over 40 years old to learn more about sport history from that person’s perspective; and (b) submit a written summary of the interview to the instructor by the posted due date. Summary prompt at the bottom after question 7.
Assignment: First, familiarize yourself with the interview questions below. This will help you choose an appropriate person over 40 years of age to interview. Family members may be interviewed for this assignment; in fact, it might be a fun activity to do with a parent or grandparent. That said, any person over 40 who is willing to answer the interview questions will do. The interview can be done in person, by phone, or by video call. Please do not email the questions to get written answers.
It is a good idea to record the interview, as long as your interviewee is comfortable with you doing so; if not, do not record.Â
During the interview, please ask the following questions:Â
1) Where and when did you grow up? What was life like in the U. S. or your country back then?
2) Which sports were most popular in your region when you were young? Where did people from your region go to see live sporting events in person? Which sports did they go to see? Â
3) What were your favorite sports to play and watch as a child and adolescent? How were you introduced to these sports?
4) When you were young, did you participate in formal, organized sport leagues or in informal sports with groups of friends or neighborhood children? Please describe your experiences of each, if possible.
5) Were you denied opportunities to participate in some sports as a child or adolescent? If so, what factors kept you from participating?Â
6) Who were the greatest athletes of your youth? Who were your favorite athletes growing up? Describe these individuals as you remember them.
7) What were the most significant sporting events of your youth? Describe those you participated in or saw live in person or on television.
After you have completed your interview, write up a summary of your interviewee’s answers, making sure to capture their main points. As you do this, please be sure to keep the person anonymous by using a fake name or pseudonym for them.Â
Assignments should be typed  in 12pt. font and double spaced with one inch margins.
Assignment 2:
