Public speaking is the process of designing and delivering a speech before a live audience, in a structured and deliberated manner, to cover a wide variety of different topics, whit the intent to inform or influence the listeners (Spencer, 2018). There are different types of public speaking, including informative speaking, and persuasive speaking.
Informative speaking entails the delivery of a speech to inform or explain a concept to the audience members (Brown, 2017). In the public health practice, this type of speaking facilitates the dissemination of relevant health information to the public, to create awareness about important health topics, and decrease misinformation that could prevent people from engaging in health behavior change, or from accepting medical advice and recommendations important to improve their health outcomes and prevent diseases.
Persuasive speaking goes beyond informing the public and attempts to persuade or convince the audience about a certain viewpoint (Brown, 2017). In the delivery of health communication messages, persuasive speaking is a useful tool to disseminate information, as the intended outcome of the message is to engage the audience, either in behavior change, community engagement, or other activities. Amidst the pandemic, for example, the combination of informative and persuasive speaking has been effective to create awareness about the protective measures to stop the spreading of the virus, and at the same time, persuade individuals to receive the vaccine.
