Maggots again, but larger, full grown, they now crawled across his grief and his repentance.” He reacts by throwing all their soma out the window. Why does the Savage find the drug soma to be so terrible?Chapters 16/17:In Chapters 16 and 17, the Savage, Bernard, and Helmholtz, meet with Mustapha Mond (one of the “World Controllers”) to learn of their “punishment” for not conforming to civilization (Bernard and Helmholtz will be sent to an “island” to live, and the Savage will stay behind “for observation”). During these chapters we learn a lot about WHY the society of Brave New World was designed the way it was. Beauty, science, God, nobility, heroism, art, romantic love, family love, passion, etc. are all considered to be “politically inefficient.” These things interfere, according to Mond, with societal stability.As he says on page 220:“…The world’s stable now. And if anything should go wrong, there’s soma….”Does the description above sound like a “happy” and “stable” society to you? Certainly, the society Mond describes is comfortable, with every “need” met, but does happiness involve something different than comfort and safety, in your view?
