Non-Experimental Research Methods: Ethnography
For qualitative research, some variables of study can only be collected through certain methods. For example, some studies may utilize interviews whereas others may use observations (Privitera, 2017). The method dictates which approach is best and like quantitative methods, not all qualitative methods will work with every given research issue. For ethnography, its primary application is for approaching a given culture or group to better understand how it functions (how it exists/members co-exist, beliefs that are shared, forms involved, customs, and so on; Privitera, 2017). Data are typically gathered through observation, where the researcher often becomes a participant (i.e., joining the group), directly learning but through a complete relationship with the group or culture.
This week, you will evaluate the development and application of ethnography.
Pt 1:
You will now add information from this week’s materials to your Research Chart.
In the corresponding section, provide the name(s) of the method you reviewed, its primary use and when it should be used, strengths and limitations of the method, ethical considerations, and one example of when the method could be used (include your interests or something more general).
Length: Updated research chart, not including title and reference pages. Be sure to cite this week’s resources used in your assignment.
Pt 2:
You will now assess a scenario related to ethnography. You are invited to be creative with the scenarios concerning how they relate to the method and the questions posed for evaluation.
Here is the scenario for this week:
As a sports psychologist, you have been asked to study superstition practices among NFL sports teams.
In approach to this scenario, prepare a brief paper evaluating the following:

Explain how this scenario qualifies as a potential ethnography study.
Determine if this culture is a micro-level group or a macro-level group. Explain and support your answer.
Explore how you would use participant observation in this scenario.
Explain how issues associated with participant observation may affect this study.
Explain the role of emic vs. etic perspectives in ethnographic research.
Recommend how to mitigate these potential issues.

Support your assignment with at least one scholarly resource. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including seminal articles, may be included.

Length: 1-2 pages, not including title and reference pages
Your assignment should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards.
Pt 3:
For this week’s reflection, consider the following points:

Explain the research situations that may require you to use ethnography (be sure to give examples/be specific).
Examine common challenges learned about this method and its use.
Analyze any ethical considerations with implementing this method based on overarching ethical issues that can occur in qualitative research.
Reflect on your experience with this week’s scenario activity.
Include any questions you may have for your professor.
