Reflection Essay Composition Courses
One of my teaching goals includes helping students experience a transformation throughout the semester. A transformation involves a change, paradigm shift, or new direction in life. This type of learning becomes evident as you reflect on your class experiences and consider the following types of transformations: • Emancipation transformation: As a result of our class, you better understand suppressive forces in your life. Suppressive forces may include your family members, the government, religious organizations, the media, political entities, society, and so forth. With greater understanding you now feel free of oppressors, feeling empowered to take control of your life and choosing how you will live differently in the future. • Cognitive transformation: As a result of our class, you have a better understanding of others, their opinions, their perspectives, and how they think and feel. As you listened to me and your classmates’ perspectives, your original opinions, ideas, and beliefs shifted, and you are now adopting or creating new perspectives. You changed your mind.  • Developmental transformation: As a result of our class, you better understand how social forces such as politics, society, family, and culture have shaped your life. You now feel a greater opportunity to create your own, independent life or shape a new one by moving out, finding a better job, getting married or divorced, having children, trying a new hobby, finding a church, volunteering, or retiring. You feel this class has helped you mature mentally and emotionally. • Spiritual transformation: As a result of our class, you now feel greater mental, physical, and spiritual fulfillment. You are experiencing greater self-awareness (you know who you are, where you came from, and where you are going), and you feel a greater conviction toward your religious beliefs. Topic Reflecting on your class experiences, demonstrate your mastery of writing skills we studied and practiced this semester as you answer the following questions: • What transformation am I experiencing as a result of our class? • How and why am I experiencing this transformation? If the transformations listed above do not apply to you, show how and why your experience in this course has changed or affected you. • What does this transformation/experience mean? Demonstrate the following writing skills: Rhetorical devices for balance, clarity, and transition. Rhetorical appeals (Logos, Pathos, Ethos). Proper reasoning strategies (abduction, deduction, induction). Proper grammar, mechanics, punctuation, and syntax. Showing versus telling. Idea development. Interpretation. Formatting This essay should be approximately 2-3 pages, written in MLA formatting. Sources are not required, but if you choose to include sources, use parenthetical citations and create a works cited page. Please utilize the argumentative mode and rely on my SEEIT template for developing body paragraphs. Formatting suggestion: • Create an introduction with a thesis (state your purpose, ideas, and claim) • Create body paragraphs focusing on one idea each paragraph using SEEIT. State your idea, explain how and why your idea is true, provide specific examples from our course material and your learning experience, and interpret each idea. • Create a conclusion by interpreting what your overall experience means.
