In this assignment, you are required to apply the Chapter 8 readings in Peppard and Ward to the Cargo Management System we’ve been exploring, particularly in this week’s assigned video lectures. Think of the Cargo Management System as a collection of major modules. Some of those modules will be needed to implement the core information systems (IS) functions of the system. Many of these were discussed in the video materials. Some additional modules would be needed to add additional functions to the system in order to satisfy management information systems (MIS) requirements above and beyond what the transactional system has to supply. The key to this assignment is in breaking down the various subsystems of your system into a list of the modules and functions that would be included. A common mistake is to limit your analysis to just the major functions included in the videos. That’s wrong! The videos discussed operational systems around customer shipments. The system you are responsible for has to include all of the support transactional functions that would also be needed in addition to those operational customer-facing processes. In order for the video functions to exist, the support functions need to be defined as well. (In traditional-IT, we sometimes refer to many of those support functions as master file maintenance.) For example, in order to give the customer an empty container, we have to have containers; so Add Container, Maintain Container, and Delete Container would have to be functions somewhere. In order to have a customer, we have to be able to Add Customer, etc. To depart on a trip, we have to be able to Add Trip, etc. The maintenance/support functions will often overtake and outnumber the core mission-focused functions. Make sure your analysis is all encompassing. Just keep in mind that your operational function can’t use an asset (noun) that hasn’t been managed (added, changed, deleted). Think customers, orders, containers, vehicles, yards, terminals, vessels, trucks, trips, etc. The nouns are the meat of your system.Your goal in this assignment is to perform an analysis on your cargo system architecture using one or more of the modeling technologies covered in Peppard and Ward’s chapter eight, particularly the portfolio segmentation material in the figure 8.1, figure 8.3, table 8.2, and table 8.3 depictions. The level of analysis is the subsystem, module, or function — whatever you consider them to be. Each named element in your analysis provides part of the system implementation. Collectively, the entire set satisfies the known requirements. Spend considerable time exploring and/or brainstorming system functions so that you have as comprehensive a list as possible. The list should include many strategic functions for managing resources and the business better and more creatively in the future. The MIS functions should be able to answer the key customer and management questions expected of this type of system. Think in terms of optimizing and tracking all key resources (i.e., cargo, containers, trucks, trains, vessels, routes, terminals, warehouses) and capabilities (i.e. carriage, consolidation, pickup, delivery, stowage) from the points of view of customers, operators, and consignees.Create and submit a document (Microsoft Word is preferred) that captures and documents your analysis. A successful analysis needs to include a comprehensive list of system functions for providing both transactional IS and management MIS capabilities.
