Given Apple’s success, it would be difficult to argue Jobs’ leadership approach if you did not know that he was essentially a jerk to people. It does not taint my view of Apple, but negative treatment of employees is such an archaic and, overall, ineffective approach in the long run. Fortunately, Apple has done extremely well, especially after Jobs’ return to the helm, but I can only imagine what more Apple could have done if Jobs’ had been as empathetic as he were intelligent. That being said, transformational leadership is, to me, the most effective method for a CEO because it lends itself to the very idea of being a visionary, promoting the organization’s vision. (This does not mean that transactional leadership does not also have its place. An organization needs transactional leadership at the management level and transformational leadership at the executive level; though, I doubt either method is more effective if people are treated negatively.) In my opinion, active listening is key to facilitating a more empathetic collaborative space. Active listening lets people know that you are truly interested in what you are hearing and it builds trust. It also shows others to do the same, cultivating a culture of active listeners, and facilitates more effective communication and idea sharing and building. Apple, to me, is a leading innovator and that level of innovation would require effective collaboration. If a colleague is disrespectful, abusive, or aggressive during a collaborative exchange, I address it immediately. I am respectful and tactful, but I do not let it slide. The offending employee would be disciplined following the disciplinary policy.2.Do you agree with Jobs’ leadership approach? Why?Yes because he made sure that the employees were treated the same as well as knowing each of their responsibilities of work and also made sure he was the example they needed in order to survive. They needed innovative learning and new products for the world to see. What might you do to facilitate a more empathetic collaborative space?I would have a discussion with the employees on how to be more empathetic in different situations as well as show them a time to where being empathetic would be the acceptable and more appropriate way to handle the situationHow would effective collaboration still have allowed Apple to succeed?Effective collaboration would have still allowed Apple to succeed by bringing the team together from different departments, locations, and teams, then focusing their efforts on a common goal. As well as role playing showing them what effective collaboration looks like. What would you say to a colleague who is being disrespectful, abusive, or aggressive during a collaborative exchange?I would explain to the colleague that being disrespectful, abusive or having aggression during a collaborative exchange wouldn’t help the situation but actually make it worse and explain to them that being positive would be better in making the exchange better in the end.
