Reply to Tom:Authentic leadership to me means that you are the real deal, you are genuine and compassionate. Authentic leadership puts a huge emphasis on self-awareness and knowing what they are good at and where they can improve (Duncan et. al., 2017) By taking an emotional intelligence test gives you a better understanding of how your actions and words are impacting others and how aware you are of your own leadership style. The text states that “Emotionally intelligent leaders make every effort to develop their leadership skills, knowledge, and abilities” (Dye, 2017). Part of being aware of these efforts can guide you to being an authentic leader. Knowing your current capacity and being aware of potential discerning behavior can help you mitigate conflict and also be more apt for adjustment and be flexible to deal with setbacks (Dye, 2017). I think part of being an excellent leader is also being aware of different personalities and how your social graces may impact others in a different manner. Think about how you might talk to your boss, compared to your peer? You are emotionally aware that you have to be more precise or focused when you are talking to your boss. The reason for that is because you tailor your awareness to their perception of you. While you may tailor that same behavior to your peer it may not be on the same level or scale that it would be with your boss (Dye, 2017). As a leader, it is important not only to be self-aware but to get feedback from others on how you can help be a better leader and support their goals and address their concerns (Dye, 2017). By being self-aware and knowing your role but also the way you communicate to others is important to being a good leader. Having a good value system and genuinely caring about your staff is extremely important. As leaders, change is essential in order for growth to occur. According to Dye (2017), “Change makers, as these leaders are known, are high achievers. They actively seek out flaws in the system and implement improvements” (p. 54). In order to be effective and successful leaders, the desire to make changes is important because it not only helps to benefit the leaders themselves, but it also helps to benefit organizations and all the other people in between.For over just eight months in the leadership role at Sunrise General Hospital, an EI test was taken to learn about myself, and I am striving to become a better servant leader. In order to do so, understanding authentic leadership is important. To me, authentic leadership means that individuals are self-aware, and they stay true to themselves. As authentic leaders, they are positive and genuine people who promote openness. They reflect upon their own decisions or actions that they made and look at their strengths and weaknesses without bias. Furthermore, since authentic leaders stay true to their own beliefs, values, and principles, they are able to inspire others that they lead.In order to become a more authentic leader, there are things that I can focus on. One thing to help me to become a more authentic leader is to practice self-awareness. By being aware of myself, it can help me to have a better understanding of myself, which will empower me to make changes, help me to identify areas to make improvements, and help me to build on my strengths and work on my weaknesses. Another thing is to understand my own values. When I understand my own values, it can help me to take proper actions, make better decisions, and help me to move towards the goals I want to achieve in life.
