Hello, the assignment is to respond to these two discussion post. The topic is about the Web of causation. Please see attached rubric for discussion response requirement. Please type discussion 1 and put your response under it as if you were replying to the writer. Be sure to include references of peer reviewed article used in the response. Each discussion should include 2 references. 400 words to each response. Please respond to Karen and Allison.Discussion 1: Allison (see her web image attached). Chronic ailments in the United States have been studied for centuries. As time progressed, top researchers and providers realized that the epidemiology of a disease may not be entirely at random. There are genetic and environmental factors that play a direct role in the distribution of disease across certain populations and the role of researchers is to analyze what may cause such a distribution. A web of causation is a prominent way to identify these determinants and then present those to the wider community (Ventriglio, Bellomo, & Bhugra, 2016). One of the most prominent illnesses in the nation today is diabetes mellitus, or type two diabetes. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), there are over 34 million Americans who are currently diagnosed with diabetes. Of the millions of people who are currently diagnosed with this illness, 95% of these people have been diagnosed with type two diabetes (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2019). Of this, the number of deaths associated with this illness are commonly 87,647, the seventh highest-ranking chronic ailment in the United States. These millions of Americans spend anywhere from $15,000 to $30,000 on care and medication, with a median economic cost of almost $6 billion (Shrestha et al., 2018). Significant reasons behind a person becoming diabetic lies within the large portion sizes in the United States and the lack of activity. On top of this, there are learned habits that are passed from generation to generation that are often aiding the chronic illness, like parents who eat poorly or are unable to afford healthier options. The culture and environmental factors that are important in correlation to type two diabetes include food scarcity, income, family size, and generalized activity levels. If a person grows up in an area that offers only fast food, is unsafe for outdoor activities, and does not have extra income to buy healthier products, it can be difficult to maintain a fit figure. Over time these learned behaviors can prove problematic for someone’s weight and the chance that their pancreas may not be able to produce insulin correctly. Discussion 2 : KarenA study on economic and epidemiological impact on youth suicide found that “Globally, suicide is the second most common cause of death, after road traffic accidents, among young people aged between 15–24 years” (Doran & Kinchin, 2020). Adolescent suicide is on the rise with the United States having the most suicides per capita. Doran & Kinchin (2020) go on to say that the “crude suicide mortality rates are generally higher for males compared with females. The highest rates are seen in United States (17.99 per 100,000 males)”. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) noted that their most recent studies indicated that between 2007 and 2018, the national suicide rate among persons aged 10-24 increased by 57.4% (2021). More recently, Manzar, et al, found that during the recent pandemic the average adolescent age that committed suicide was 16.6, mostly males and most common in 3 countries; namely India, UK and the United States (2021). There can be many factors leading to youth suicide but the most common are depression and anxiety. There are root causes for these conditions which include but aren’t limited to bullying, cyberbullying, having a parent who committed suicide, loneliness, sadness, self-hatred, and fatigue. Some secondary factors during the current pandemic that could influence those feelings deal with isolation, online schooling, overwhelming academic stress and TikTok/social media addiction. “More complete understanding of the pathophysiology underlying anxiety disorders and major depression in youth is necessary to advance the development of new early intervention strategies” (Kalin, 2021). While occasionally being sad is a normal part of a child’s life, there are symptoms to be aware of that are early indicators of anxiety and depression (CDC, 2021). Managing symptoms and getting the right treatment begins with speaking with a healthcare provider or a mental health professional. Being healthy is important for all children and leading a healthy lifestyle can play a role in managing symptoms of depression or anxiety (CDC, 2021). Starting during the early years of childhood, children should be encouraged to be active and lead a healthy lifestyle. Good habits continue on through adolescence and with youth suicidal ideations, prevention is necessary to decrease the number of those adolescents who attempt or succeed in committing suicide.
