The theory of mind is the act of thinking about thought or metacognition.
According to Wellman and Hickling children appear to develop a theory of mind between the ages 3 to 5. Although they have a theory of mind it is not the same as an adults. They seem to develop into an adult theory of mind between the ages 6 to 10.
The importance of theory of mind is so children can understand what others believe. They can interpret what is actually real versus a play object.
