There are several ways that research drives public policy and the available resources for crime control. One way that research drives public policy is by following the current trend of current public interest. Whichever research techniques are popular and trendy at the time, is what will be investigated, regardless of what the real problems are. This research idea is also known as “Bandwagon Science”.  Bandwagon science: focusing research on what is trendy or popular at a given time, perhaps ignoring other worthy problems and avenues of inquiry (Worrall, J.L., 2015).  Another method of research that influences public policy is called “Academic Crusade”, in which the topic researched follows a certain political agenda. Academic crusade: when research loses objectivity and is used to further a political agenda, often in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary (Worrall, J.L., 2015). This method is sometimes used by politicians in order to receive a specific group’s support and to gain maximum votes in targeted areas. This method of research affects public policy in a negatively considering it does not address the crime control tenue of that particular area.
