He is a switch hitter, plays third base, and considers himself to be a power hitter. He has been following a 3-day-per-week resistance training program for the past 2 off-seasons but has not done any type of plyometric training. When you test him on his upper and lower body strength he is above average in all tests.Recommendations/Considerations: While strength in the vertical plane (squats, pull ups) and the horizontal plane (push-ups) can certainly benefit baseball players, baseball is largely a rotational sport. Therefore, training rotation with various medicine ball throws would seem to benefit baseball players and provide a method to increase bat speed. Implementation: Implement a 6-week plyometric program with this athlete in addition to his resistance training program. He will spend 10–15 minutes performing plyometric exercises prior to each of his 3 resistance training sessions per week. His plyometric program should consist of some jumping drills, such as countermovement jumps and broad jumps, as well as medicine ball throws, such as chest passes and overhead throws. Decide the main focus of his plyometric including rotational medicine ball throws, such as the lateral toss, two-handed put throw, wood chop throw, and lateral slams.
