Afghanistan is a unique and beautiful country, for generations it has been at war, in 1979 the Russians invaded and after 10 years left with a loss.  Until September 11, 2001 most of the American public had never heard of Afghanistan, even though it is one of only a few countries that an American Ambassador has been murdered.  Years of war filled with years of violence, the United States left Afghanistan in 1979 when the Russians came in the front door we escaped through the back door.  In these readings we will learn of the importance of Afghanistan to the region, as well as the internal and regional problems.   These readings are required for this module:
Post-9-11 regarding Military action in Afghanistan, initially the responsibility for all counternarcotics efforts was assigned to the United Kingdom.  Once the extent of the poppy problem was evaluated and it was determined the strength of the funding for the Taliban, AQ and HQ from narcotics proceeds it was agreed that the U.S. would assume a stronger role.  The DOS and DEA were charged with developing a counternarcotics strategy.  The Congressional Testimony captures the importance of understanding the value of drug proceeds and how Narcoterrorist organization depend on this funding stream.
