How can the content of this video program be related to the major issues facing American corrections today?Part 2. Juan- 1. What do you think is a key message this program tries to deliver. As for the key messages that are being given in the video, I believe that there is more than one key message. A key message that I believe is shown is that are there is hope for those offenders who care to want to make a change in their lives if they are driven to do so. The right path needs to be set to those individuals who tend to make bad decisions in their lives. In the video there is a lot of insight given by those offenders who want and have made a change in their lives and they all tend to speak about a point in their lives that helped them see that they need to make a change in order for them to get out of the current lifestyle they are in. I believe that this is important because not all offenders see their wrongdoings like these individuals. I think that there should be a system in place for those individuals who cannot see their wrongdoings to help them see the negative impacts on the decisions they are making. I believe in doing so, it may open up the offender’s minds and realize what wrong choices they are making as well as letting them know or give them support to help them make that change. I also think that giving motivation was another key that was pretty important in this video because those who were motivated ended up making the change to help them see a better future. I also believe that the prison system should incorporate some kind of support mechanism to help motivate offenders make the right choices as well as help them make the change for the better. 2. How can the content of this video program be related to the major issues facing American corrections today?I believe that some the issues that occur in corrections today is that drive for motivation for an offender to make the right change. Another issue that American corrections faces today is the recidivism rates of offenders. If the offenders who sit on parole today I think that they should have some strive for motivation to get a move on with their lives. Some of the reasons for prisoners who tend to re offend again are those who cannot simply adjust to the life that we live today. This mainly because those who cannot adjust are those who have been locked up for a long term. Adjustment systems should be set into place to help these individuals who lack adjustment back out into society. Another issue that faces American corrections to day is that sometimes the offenders going onto probation or parole lack goals in their life. The video gave good examples of those who had goals and kept themselves busy. If those parolees or probationers had that same amount of motivation to keep themselves busy then I believe that recidivism rates would drop. Life skills should also be taught to those on probation as well as these skills are an important key factor of surviving out into society after being locked up for such a long time. Doing so could help the offender not be strong minded and help them understand that they have the key to make the right changes to their future. Part 3. Angie- Regarding the video “Life After Prison,” I firmly believe the key message this program is delivering is that the method of rehabilitation within the imprisonment process has numerous positive outcomes over harsh sentencing and retribution. Conveyed in the video provided, many detainees acquire encouragement to turn their lives around, and only some are provided with tools and programming which aids the commencement of their change in persona. As portrayed in the video by past prisoners, education and mentoring programs aided them to become successful, lawful citizens and has helped them immensely to gain a second chance to change their lives around. The key message of installing rehabilitative tactics into prison has prompted other numerous positive outcomes, for example: decline of returning to prison and an increase in self-achievement and self-esteem. With seeking help, acquiring specified treatment, and setting goals for themselves through the help of mentors, these detainees have worked to become better versions of themselves, which in the long run does eliminate the probability of reoffending and recidivism due to the fact that these individuals don’t have as much complications of getting jobs and adapting to an educated society after being released from their imprisonment. Debates contributing to the implementation of rehabilitation over retribution has been a major issue concerning American corrections today. The content of this video relates greatly to this issue due to the fact that the documentary possesses life stories of real post detainees which benefited from rehab programming in prison. Programs discussed throughout the video which are provided for those incarcerated can aid, in the long run, to decrease the high numbers regarding recidivism and will help with the reintegration of offenders into society.Because most offenders grow up in harsh environments which normalize participation in illegal activity, these individuals lack the knowledge of how to be lawful citizens and engage in criminal acts that support their financial stability, their mental instability, etc. With the aid of rehabilitative methods within the time of their imprisonment, these prisoners learn that hard work and education is the way of bettering their lives. Encouragement and mental support provided by rehabilitation and the positive statistics which come out of this programming encourages the law enforcement system to take more rehab initiatives for these detainees, which can also help with the immense costs of having individuals in prison.
