1. According to the article, what is “surveillance capitalism” all about and why might it be so destructive? Â From the video, what is “manufactured demand” and how does this play into ethical issues? Â Do you think most people care or realize these things?
2. In the first video showing the creation of Dasani as Coke’s brand and how it was marketed, how is the company trying to address ethical issues like environmental impact? Â Do you think this is enough or what suggestions would you have for them?
3. According to the second video, advertising and marketing in our current economic model contribute to the destruction of the planet and our low happiness index here in the US. Â It also raises the idea of manufactured demand. Why or how might these things be true?
4. What do you consider the largest ethical issue related either to the current set up of online data collection through our apps or to how products are marketed to us? Â You could include a range of things like privacy issues, health scares, false pictures of where bottled water comes from, environmental destruction, and bottle disposal, etc.
5. Lay out the top pro (supporters) and con (critics) arguments for advertising and marketing. Â Use ideas from our text and your own research. Â Finally, state your overall opinion about it. Â What would be your biggest talking point in defense or against it.
