The substance as well as the manner of organization and expression of the information and ideas will be evaluated. Option 1: Explain the history (Origins), beliefs, rituals and practices of one religion not covered in this course, including any New Religious Movement; you may choose from Daonism, Confucianism, Shinto, Wicca, Baha’i, Rastafarianism, Theosophy, Jehovah’s Witnesses, or Cao Dai, etc. (Please do not choose Scientology).If you choose this option, you need to address the following 5 points:
1. What culture produced this religion?
2. If there was a founder, and if anything can be known of the founder’s      life, what factors caused this person to found this religion?
3. If there are scriptures or sacred texts, what do they tell us about this religion?
4. What have been the major historical developments of this religion?
5. How do participants practice this religion? What are the religious rituals, behaviors, and events that shape how they live their lives?
Option 2:You may choose to focus on a specific practice from a religious tradition we are not covering in this course. Some examples are: Vision Quest in the Native American Tradition; The primal religions; The concept of soul in different religions; World religions with no concept of God; the Buddhist concept of emptiness; the two paths described in the Upanishads; Mormon Weddings; Quaker Meetings; B’hai Temples.
Finally, you may choose to study some additional areas exploring the role of religious practices in society: Examples are: The 9/11 Islamic Center Controversy; Restrictions on Churches Receiving Tax Exempt Status; and The Wearing of Religious Head Garb by Disney Employees.II.Comparative Research PaperThe final research paper requires the comparison of a practice from at least two religious traditions. Some examples are: A comparison of Marriage preparation in the Hindu and Jewish Traditions; Buddhist and Muslim Wedding Ceremonies Compared; Group Gathering for Centering Prayer and Zen Meditation: similarities and differences; Polytheistic religions and mythology: similarities in myths and images of gods; Monotheistic religions: similarities and differences.; The role of drumming in  Native American and African Religious Traditions; Catholic and Protestant Church Interiors Compared; Two walking practices: The Labyrinth in Episcopal Churches and Buddhist walking; Compare the Ramadan and Lent.
