Based on your research on a career and major and what you learned about your interests, values, personality and skills, answer the following questions about your Career Decision. Step 4 Plan: Translate the decision into effective action.
Write one long-term SMART goal supporting your Career Decision. Write three short-/mid-term SMART goals that will help you accomplish your career goal. Here is an example of a SMART long-term goal: After obtaining a bachelor’s degree from School of Media and Journalism in the fall of 2022, I will pursue a career at a newspaper, magazine or online literary source.

Do extensive research about the career and major you are considering. What is the job outlook for this career? Do you know how long it takes to get the degree you need? Make sure you are well informed and willing to commit what it takes to accomplish this goal.
Remember, you do not have to be 100 percent certain of your major to choose your college, but it does help. Knowing your major will help you choose the right college and the right program, which can save you time and money in the long run.
Set career and educational goals based on the decisions you have made at this time. You will want to revisit these periodically to make sure you are on track or to make any changes based on new information or decisions you are making.
Create a career strategy. Make sure to include how you want to be perceived professionally and what your brand says about you. Create a network and keep it up to date at all times. Learn how to write a résumé and interview effectively. Continue to build your skills and learn new things. All of these things will ensure you have value in the marketplace.
Supplement your degree with a strong set of soft skills. Seek opportunities outside the classroom to sharpen your competencies in oral and written communication, collaboration and teamwork, critical thinking and creative problem solving, and professionalism and work ethic.
Remember that life is all about change. Companies change and go out of business. New technology requires that we learn new skills. Things may happen in your personal life to change your plans.
