OBSERVATION 3 Sex and Gender
Sex and Gender

We learned that sex is biological and gender is cultural. We listened to an NPR program that introduced us to two families with boys who were born identifying as girls. From the minute they could speak, they told their parents they were girls. However, the social norms and values ascribed these girls as boys due to their biology. As parents generally want what is best for their children, both families sought out help. One family was encouraged to accept their child as a daughter whereas the other family were discouraged from accepting the child as a girl.
Assignment
Compare the two families on 3 ways they interact with their child differently and 3 consequences of how their child is doing in society – specifically their happiness and interactions with other children. I recommend using a table as it is one way to ensure you are comparing these families on each item.
Resources
You may create a table in Word – and you have access to it here in CANVAS. Simply, log into Office 365 and open a blank Word document.Once you create your table and complete your assignment, save the document and attach it to this assignment upload file submission.

If you need some direction on how to use Office 365 in Canvas this link will outline each step: Office 365 in Canvas (Links to an external site.)
You may not use my words. You must replace my words with your own. This is an example to help you organize your work.

Here is a wonderful (and short) video on making  Tables in Word (Links to an external site.)
Example
Insert a table. Make it 3 columns and 7 rows. They table should have Family 1 and Family 2 as table headings, and 6 rows of differences. In my example belwo, I completed the first line of Parental Interaction and the first line of Consequences — you may not use these and must create your own.

It should look like this:

Family ComparisonFamily 1Family 2Parent interaction: Accept/Reject Transgender identityFamily 1 rejects the child’s gender identityFamily 2 accepts the child’s gender identityParent interaction Describe how family1 interactsDescribe how family 2 interactsParent interaction Describe how family1 interactsDescribe how family 2 interactsConsequences/how child interacts in society: PlaysThe child refuses to playThe child plays with girls at schoolConsequences/how child interacts in societyDescribe how child interacts in society family 1Describe how child interacts in society family 2Consequences/how child interacts in societyDescribe how child interacts in society family 1Describe how child interacts in society family 2
