Does the internet have its benefits? Sure. Would I say there are a lot of benefits… not really, especially when we take into consideration the drawbacks. At the risk of oversimplifying things the internet essentially uses connections to do everything we were doing before just faster. Is this a good thing? Not remotely. For example, I can search (google, bing, etc.) any question I have on any subject and find the answer much faster than pulling out a textbook (buying the text book in the first place which used to be a much larger industry before the internet), reading it, learning what I am doing, and discovering the answer through learning. That’s all essentially gone thanks to the internet, learning is no longer gaining understanding of knowledge it is just knowing where to find that knowledge. Tradesmen are replaced by youtube warriors, viral videos teach us “life hacks” because we have lost the ability to use glue and duct tape without a reddit thread.
Were we really meant to be able to express our thoughts instantaneously with someone on the other side of the planet? Probably not but we built planes when we didn’t have wings. I would agree that being able to chat with someone in Tokyo has its benefits to an extent, but now I don’t have to see another part of the world to think I have “experienced” it the same way Mark Twain did not too long ago. We aren’t more connected, we are more standoffish and more isolated from one another from behind our screens. I agree with a lot of this message but actually don’t think it paints enough of a bleak picture.
The internet is a tool, are we using it to tear down or build the future? Who knows. I still can’t figure out what value any comments section on any news article in the history of ever brings to society.
