(Links to an external site.)Do not discuss the Magills (the criticism) as this will be part of the next assignment. Try to put the stories into your own words having read them carefully so that you know “every single ingle” as Joyce would say. Look up words, come to class/office hours ask me anything. DO NOT plagiarise some online summaries or cut and paste from the Magills (although you will read their summaries I am sure…) …. but the reason for your showing me as much as possible in your own words is that it shows me you understand the basics of the stories and is designed to help you and to make writing the paper easier. If you are silly and decide to cut and paste on-line summaries: a) Turnitin will give you a zero! and b) you won’t really know what the stories are about so then you will not be able to brainstorm a thesis. Also the idea is to keep you from writing summaries when you are writing an essay. Three plot summaries now is good. Three plot summaries presented as an essay on the final will be a big problem.So read the stories and read the plot summaries in the Magills just in case you missed any details and then write three summaries in one document in your own words. Each summary being roughly a page (350 words). You are not writing an essay at this point. Just three basic summaries. One at a time, one page each: just so that I feel happy that you a) read them and b) you understand the basics of what is happening. The NEXT assignment will be to summarise the 4 critics and they ideas they present in their Themes and Meanings/Form and Technique sections so do NOT do that now! Save that for the next assignment.
