Quick responses to two classmates discussion one: The emerging issue in healthcare that I chose to discuss for this assignment is health informatics but particularly the increasing amount of data collection and how this information is being collected, stored, and even shared. We live in a world of evidence-based medicine and although that “evidence” has and continues to serve us well in its practical sense, the way we safeguard that information has recently been threatened. Ways to breach cybersecurity continue to become more sophisticated and can leave long-lasting effects on anyone who becomes a victim. There are a few obstacles that we are facing when it comes to data. The term “Big Data” is used to describe the large amounts of information that is being collected, categorized, and disseminated among state and federal agencies, local organizations, and even within communities (Islam et al., 2020). This information is useful in that researchers, or data analysts use this qualitative and quantitative data to understand a population or an individual patient. People are living longer, and data collection is starting much earlier in life, but who has the right to all your medical data? You have hospital records from your birth, pediatrician records from your childhood, records with your family practitioner in addition to any specialty provider records you might have been subjected to in addition to any ancillary services; dental, vision, radiology, physical therapy, and so on. However, in there the problem lies; databases do not communicate well. Not to mention, within each database/server the potential for another breach of information with all your personally identifiable information. A breach in medical data can be detrimental to individuals, populations, communities, governments, and even national security. References:Dalrymple, P. W. (2011). While many different factors can influence health, including lifestyle choices, genetics, race, gender, community, and economic status, climate change affects us all. According to Salihu and Azuine (2020), climate change is a global health threat responsible for many diseases and deaths. When researchers go upstream and look for root causes of diseases and epidemics, they often find connections to climate change. According to the World Health Organization (n.d.), climate change increases zoonotic diseases and epidemics globally. Climate change and global warming have caused a shift in how vectors and pathogens breed and survive. Global warming has caused vectors including ticks and mosquitoes to survive longer, reproduce more, and spread deadlier zoonotic diseases to humans (WHO, n.d.). Climate change is also responsible for extreme weather patterns, which causes millions of deaths. According to Ebi and Hess (2020), rising sea levels, heatwaves, flooding, and hurricanes caused by climate change, directly and indirectly, cause famine, poverty, droughts, wildfires, air pollution, respiratory illnesses, heart disease, and mental illness. Unlike other emerging health threats, climate change differs because it is surrounded by political controversy. According to Dietz (2020), Democrats, Liberals, and moderate Republicans have been working towards improving climate change over time. However, many conservative Republicans believe climate change is a hoax (Dietz 2020). Bringing awareness to the dangers of climate change through health education can be challenging since many people get their information from social media instead of scientific facts and literature.
