Both “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and “Yellow Woman” by Leslie Marmon Silko have narrators that may or may not be completely reliable. Indeed, both narrators question the veracity of their own perception at times. As you know from your reading this week, any time you have a first-person narrator, you need to ask yourself whether or not you can trust them. Are they recounting the story the way it really happened, or at least the way they think it happened? Do they have a reason to lie or distort the truth? Are there circumstances that might make it very difficult for them to be able to relate events accurately? Because we are reading fiction stories, we can’t always count on our own perception of what is and is not possible to determine whether or not a narrator is reliable, so we have to look for clues within the story. This week, you are going to post about which of these two narrators you think is most reliable – or do you perhaps think they are equally trustworthy or untrustworthy? To do this, pay very close attention to the setting and atmosphere in each story. What clues can you uncover in the setting that will help you determine whether or not you can trust each narrator? Pay attention to how they describe their surroundings – do their descriptions align with the way other characters seem to perceive or experience the setting? Do their descriptions change, and if so, why and when? You may also want to pay attention to motifs as you consider setting. Often, motifs can help connect events and even characters, establishing a sense of realistic cohesion or, conversely, a disruption in a motif might challenge the coherence of a reality within a story. Motifs can also help to establish atmosphere or mood. What is the atmosphere in each story? Is the narrator projecting her own feelings onto the setting? Or is the setting impacting the narrator’s state of mind?There are no right or wrong answers here. These questions are complex; don’t be surprised if you find yourself asking more questions the more you attempt to construct an answer. Questions are good! In fact, I’d like you to end your first post with a question that is meant to help spur on the conversation. What still stumps you? What did you wonder about as you tried to answer this prompt? Are there ideas you want classmates to react to – agree, disagree, or something in between? In your first post, write a paragraph in which you address the above prompt about the reliability of the narrators in “The Yellow Wallpaper” and “Yellow Woman.” In your paragraph response, include specific information about setting, atmosphere, and/or motifs from each story to support your answer. Try not to write about a part of each story someone else has already written about, unless you have something substantial and new to say about it. End your paragraph with a question that both relates to your response and prompts others to take your ideas or ponderings further. In your second post, Engage with their ideas. Maybe you have an answer to question or maybe it makes you wonder about something. Maybe you can point out a specific moment in one or both of the stories that seems relevant, though you might not know how. Perhaps you can even point out a connection between two posts. Pretend you are in a conversation that you want to keep going. Aim to write a short paragraph for your second post (3-4 sentences). Third post: Post a third time in this discussion thread . If you do so – and your post is thoughtful and substantial – you will receive 10 extra points that can make up for a post you might miss later in the semester.
