Cheryl Thomas RE: Week 1 Discussion
Hello Professor and class,
I live in Maryland (and have my whole life). I am married with two kids, a daughter (almost 20) and a son (almost 13). I have been working in public health (at a local health department) for almost 15 years. I am pursuing a degree in Business Administration. One thing that is unique about my background is I am fortunate to have traced my family on my dad’s side to the 1600s. My mom’s family comes from Germany and it has been traced back to WWI. My dad’s side was traced back to the early 1600s, all in Maryland.
The company I am selecting is Marriott. An influential stakeholder associated with Marriott over the past 12 months is David Rodriquez. He is Marriott’s global chief human resources officer. He also was HR Executive of the year in 2019. Mr. Rodriguez promoted and executed, during the pandemic, the furlough of employees. During the furlough, he  also was instrumental in developing all salary cuts for the executives. These salary cuts went towards the health insurance coverage of the furloughed hotel employees. His actions were for the good of the company. Marriott has been voted one of the top world’s top employers, with an 85% approval rating among employees. Marriott prides itself on prioritizing all employees and their well-being. With the pandemic, it has caused the hotel industry to come to a crashing halt. With the cuts necessary, Marriott has been able to at least pay for some of the health insurance costs of employees that are not working.Â
