Scenario: You have been asked to give a presentation to a local group of freshman year health profession students. Most of the students in the audience are eager to hear what you have to say, but one asks the following question:
“Our country is farther and farther behind the rest of the world in connecting technologically with our medical systems. I would like your advice about an idea I’ve been working on. Creators and makers are making millions on apps and software while we all sit here and take College Algebra and OMG English Lit. I want to really make a difference. I want to create a software system for medicine that unifies all hospitals, offices, labs, etc. under one system. I’m even ready to drop out to get this done because “time’s a wasting” and I don’t want to miss the Uber of health tech!”

How would you respond to this young ambitious and well-wishing (yet possibly naïve) plan?
Be sure to include an overview of the current ecosystem for health information exchange, data standards and systems architecture.
Don’t just use “buzz words;” give real-world examples that demonstrate your point.
Consider even providing the audience member and the audience with alternatives, and more tangible, and realistic approaches.
How would you also possibly include the audience in the discussion to validate the idea while passing on “practical wisdom” of your experience?

In your professional career you need to be able to participate in an intellectual debate. You need to not only present and defend your opinions, but you need to acknowledge and defend or refute other opinions. In your responses to your classmates, take on the role of a contentious student.
