Since the beginning of this course, we’ve watched films from the 1920s to the 1960s. This week, we’ll begin to synthesize what we’ve learned in an essay examining the evolution of film during this time period. Choose one film from each decade to analyze in a 4-5-page essay that considers the following questions:~In an introductory section, discuss why you’ve chosen to examine the films you have. Then, write a concise but thorough section (a paragraph or two) for each film, addressing these questions:~ Why was this film interesting and/or important?~ What are the film’s main themes; what is its thesis, or argument?~ What are the film’s strengths and weaknesses?~ How does this film contribute to the genre of film, in general? In what ways does it advance tradition or break new ground?~ Finally, in a concluding section, synthesize what the collection of films you’re looking at culminates in. Are there common denominators? Contrary impulses? Contributions to ongoing cultural narratives?
