The final will be composed of three parts. Parts I and II will be exactly as you encountered them on the midterm: reading passage identifications and short essay responses to the framing questions for lectures. Once again you’ll be given three prompts and asked to respond to two of them. Parts I and II will only concern the readings/lectures from the second half of the course (ie, after the midterm). Be sure that your answers support points with references to both the lectures and the readings. These responses should be 2-3 paragraphs.Part III will involve one longer essay. Below are three essay prompts. Only one of them will appear on the exam, but you should be prepared to answer each of them. Your responses should be 4-5 paragraphs. Note that part III is cumulative in nature, meaning that you’ll need to draw on the full sweep of the course material in crafting your response. 1) You have been tasked with writing a comprehensive historical account of Korea’s minjung movement. What are the central episodes, actors, and issues that figure into your “people’s history” of Korea? 2) If you were to build a museum on the history of Korean-US relations, what would you exhibit and why? Pick three main themes, identify key events and actors involved, and explain how you would guide visitors through your museum.3) Notions of ethnic nationalism runs deep in both Koreas. Where did ideas about a homogenous national identity come from and how did they evolve across the twentieth century — and into the twenty-first? The final is open book, open note, but you are expressly forbidden from consulting the web. There is in fact no need to do so and I’ll be hawkishly on the look out for plagiarism in it’s many forms.
