As discussed in the earlier discussions there are many factors that a manager considers to develop a training sessions. It takes up time, effort and incurs costs to the business. So, it is in the best interest of the business and the managers that the training session is successful through effective learning. One crucial factor for effective learning is that both trainee and trainers have a rapport with each other. Establishing a rapport between the two parties will ensure a proper working and learning environment where by both parties can understand each other effectively. It ensures that there is good two way communication between the two which allows them to freely ask, learn and clear out any doubts or questions about the training. Without a rapport, the trainee might not be motivated to learn and may lose focus which means that they might not retain much from the training. This in end will require the organization to re-train the employees which will add up to the costs and also undermine the time and effort that the managers have given.
When I was working as a RJ, we had a training about the new equipment that the company just bought. This equipment was the latest track-master RJ set which would allow us to edit sound clips on the fly, call and receive multiple phone calls and also host multiple mics at once. Before this, we used to have a station master who would help with all these technical tasks. But after this equipment, it would basically eliminate his role. He wasn’t that happy about it. So during the training, his attitude towards the trainer was not very professional. This simply created an environment of negativity and the training session was not much fruitful than expected. Our station manager had to send us to separated training sessions for us to learn about the same equipment.

Good rapport helps to establish the necessary positive climate needed for a successful training session, which in turn facilitates effective learning. The environment can align the goals and commitment of both the trainer and trainee into a common, productive bond. Also, by establishing rapport with the trainees, the trainer creates a better environment to influence, learn and teach, in a comfortable setting where trainees may be more likely to accept the trainer’s ideas, to share information, and to create opportunities together.
When establishing rapport, it’s very important for a trainer to research their audience. An audience analysis helps the trainer determine learning objectives for the curriculum by discovering what participants know and what they still need to learn. It will also uncover any resistance to the training, which allows the trainer to take steps to mitigate that resistance within the training design.
This analysis is also used in identifying audience specifics and adapting speech to their interests, level of understanding, attitudes, and beliefs. Taking an audience-centered approach is important because a speaker’s effectiveness will be improved if the presentation is created and delivered in an appropriate manner.
