write. Your letter will be no less than 4 to 5 pages (double-spaced), and it will be addressed to
a specific audience and have a specific purpose. In your letter, you will integrate a minimum of 3
sources that will bolster and support your purpose and argument. Your letter must show that
you meaningfully engaged with all of the above “First Steps.â€
Your letter will have an opening that establishes the point of the letter and your relationship to
the reader. How explicitly you do this depends upon what your reader needs to hear.
Politicians, businesspeople, government officials, and newspaper editors all appreciate letters

Your letter will have a main body (paragraphs) that explains and develops the point of the
letter. You must consider whether you will have longer body paragraphs (such as in a letter as
essay) or shorter body paragraphs. Tailor your paragraph length to your purpose and audience.
Your letter will have a conclusion that reiterates the main point of the letter, whether that
involves calling for action, reaffirming your relationship to the reader, sending regards, or
thanking the reader for their time.
* Remember that you will integrate 3 sources that support your argument (MLA citation style).
You should direct quote and graft bits of short text from the sources. No long quotes or block
quotes!
* Remember that you want to decide on a tone of voice for your letter—how formal or
informal will you be? You need to consider the personality you want to project as it relates to
your audience. Think about the rhetorical appeals, too: ethos, pathos, logos.
* Include a separate Works Cited page according to MLA style.
