Reflections on Popular Culture in the age of Covid
For your final assignment, I’d like you to reflect on the place of popular culture and media platforms in pandemic life. I invite you to make this a personal essay, using the readings and discussions from this quarter as a touchstone. What has been the place of popular culture in this moment of crisis? Using an analytic lens, what have you observed about the place of media platforms in both helping people manage in this time or perhaps even intensifying the crisis? Has your use of media platforms shifted? In what way? Has your engagement with (or perspectives on) varying kinds of content shifted? How?Â
My goal in this assignment is to use the tools we’ve developed and discussed to help you analyze this unusual and unprecedented year we’ve had. I hope this essay will be one that you can save and look back on in the future as a cultural record of your life, thoughts, and reflections in this moment. So much has shifted in the past year; social media isn’t just an addendum to our in-person interactions, but rather it has become a wholesale replacement for it in so many ways. Anecdotally, paid partnerships and sponsored posts seem to be even more prevalent than before as many people are finding ways to supplement lost income and companies are happy to monetize increased activity online. Our relationships to fantasy and travel and play have changed, and the phone (or tablet or computer) can provide a window into other worlds and times that feel more distant than ever. On the other hand, the pleasures of music and dance have proliferated in platforms like TikTok and Instagram, and people have found other ways to connect online with others around cultural productions and cultural play. What is your assessment? What has been your experience? You’re not obliged to write from a personal place, but you are welcome to do so if you’re so inspired.Â
