Part I: Scenario
You just won tickets to that thing you love as a prize in a contest sponsored by Cool Ranch Doritosâ„¢ that you forgot you entered three months ago! Bummer, though, you have both class and work on the day of the thing. Now you have to write a bunch of emails.

In one Word document, write an email to each of the following people:

Your boss: You’ll need to ask for the day off at work in order to attend.
Your teacher: You’ll need to miss class, but your teacher is strict about attendance and often gives pop quizzes.
Your friend: You wouldn’t dream of going to the thing without your friend, BUT your friend is in class with you on that day. What do you say to your friend? Email your friend with a plan.

Part II: Comparison
When you write your emails, imagine your boss, one of your teachers, and your best friend. Try to imagine what you would say to each person in your email. Make your tone realistic for each situation. Once you have written the emails, use the Comments feature in your Word or Google doc to compare the style you used in each, and address the following:

Highlight and comment on the general differences do you see
Highlight and identify words and/or sentences that characterize the different styles
Comment on which email do you think would be the most effective, and why

Read Google on pages 162 & 186-187, and PWC on page 83. In a 4- to 6-page written report, address the following questions:Compare the findings described above for Millennials to your own views on Millennial characteristics. What surprises you about the findings? What doesn’t surprise you?If you think about the three types of commitment—affective, continuance, and normative—which do you think is most changed among Millennials (or twenty-somethings)? In what way?Consider all the initiatives and programs Google uses to inspire employee loyalty. Do most of those seek to “move the needle” on affective commitment, continuance commitment, or normative commitment?Do you agree with Bock that star performers should get a lot more—not just a little more—than average performers? If someone earning a 3 on Google’s evaluation system gets a two percent (2%) raise, what should employees earning 4’s and 5’s get?Given the budget issues created by giving star performers more, should someone earning a 3 get a two percent (2%) raise—or should they get less? What are the arguments for and against a two percent raise level for average performers?Consider all the things Google’s People Operations group does to motivate its employees. Which motivation theories do they seem to be leveraging, and how?

I’m working on a management discussion question and need support to help me study.

Consult the Business Plan Part II handout before preparing your commentary. You need to try to estimate your expenses (budget and cash flow) first, so you have something to talk about. Once you have completed both your prospective budget and your prospective cash flow statement for the first year, start working on your commentary.
Given the importance of this first step, the handout gives all importance to calculating expenses. Finding financing sources is a separate matter, for the final business plan. In this forum, you will therefore only discuss how you have calculated your expenses. Describe generally how you went about it, especially any surprises or head-scratchers along the way.
Did you benchmark against another company? Did you postpone investing in a storefront? Will you wait to hire people? Did you look up law firms, CPAs, or payroll services? Perhaps you have personal experience with helpful services for small businesses in your area. Is it feasible to start your small business in a business incubator to lower your startup costs? Is it feasible to start your company as an online venture? (Remember the home office option.) Give other students reasons to chime in with ideas. Brainstorming should occur here.
