1. Write a draft report that applies what you have learned reading and discussing Calling Bullshit:
Find an article, post, graph, advertisement, or other example of media that exhibits one or more of the problems discussed in the book Calling Bullshit, such as:
claiming or implying that there is a a causal relationship between variables when only a correlation has been established
citing a number without the proper context (such as the denominator):
large-sounding number reported even though the percentage is modest
a scary percentage reported even though the absolute numbers are small
selection bias or survivorship bias driving mistaken perceptions or conclusions
visually misleading graphs, charts, or figures
mistaken faith in the power of Big Data or AI to overcome human biases
the prosecutor’s fallacy
publication bias
unfair comparisons
and so on…
In a report of 550-700 words identify and address the problem(s) in the article, post, graphic, or so on:
Reference the title and publication of the article, post, or source in your report and include a functioning link to it.
Explain the problem(s) you found and why it (or they) might influence how a reader perceives or responds to the issues raised in the article or post.
Briefly discuss why the applicable problem raised by Calling Bullshit matters in general. (That is, why does the issue you spotted matter more broadly when it occurs in other contexts?)
Address how the author or creator could have avoided, fixed, or resolved these problems. What context or additional data could have been provided to the readers? How do you expect that those additional data might have changed the results or arguments of the article or post?
If your report highlights a problem with a misleading graph or chart, create a new graph or chart with the same data in which the problem is fixed and include your new version in your report. (Approximate the data as best you can given the original graph or chart.)
