Purpose: Â This assignment will be an exercise in developing a thesis statement and using it as the basis for an outline of your Unit 4 Essay: Analysis of a Play.
Task: Â
Part 1. Craft a thesis statement that you could potentially use for your Unit 4 Essay: Analysis of a Play
Your goal for your thesis statement is to demonstrate what spin your chosen symbols or characters to compare have on a particular theme. Be sure to explore what this all adds up to–what effect the choices made in terms of symbol and/or character have in terms of the play’s overall message about the theme. In other words, provide a plausible answer to the implicit questions, “What is the play’s stance on this theme?” and “Why did the play make these choices to depict the them in this way?” Asking yourself these questions will help you refine your overall focus and thesis.
As an example: In an analysis of the play Andre’s Mother (not one of our options for this paper, but available as an example drama), a student might focus on the theme of “maternal/paternal love” and consider how the characters Cal and Arthur depict, describe, and discuss the theme. One appropriate thesis statement for this particular topic would be something similar to the following:
“By contrasting the coldness and disapproval that Cal describes Andre receiving from his mother with the affectionate and respectful love that Arthur felt for Andre, the play suggests that it is not a blood relationship but rather the presence or absence of paternal or maternal love that makes one an influential parental figure, thus emphasizing the irony of the play’s title.”
Then, the student could incorporate lines of dialogue from Cal and Andre to provide evidence for how they each perceive or demonstrate their respective views of love.
Part 2. Support this thesis with evidence using one or more quotes from your chosen drama organized in the form of an outline. Follow the outline instructions on this page.
