It is very important for a human service organization to understand context and business protocol for communication purposes.  In the field, one may encounter individuals from all over the world.  To properly assist these individuals, it’s essential to know and understand their background and culture.  Obtaining this information will allow one to effectively communicate by their cultural standards as well as understanding cultural etiquette.  Samovar states, “Communication rules exhibit a great deal of cultural diversity, making the possibility of miscommunication an ever-present consideration.  To avoid these pitfalls, you need to be aware of the potential problems that differences in culturally based protocols can bring to an intercultural exchange†(Samovar 2017 p. 339).Â
Even though human service organizations are in assisting those in need, there is always business being handle in the background.  Most organizations are requesting the business of other organizations.  Samovar defines business protocol as forms of behavior such as establishing initial contact, greeting conventions, personal appearance, gift-giving, and communication improprieties, with culture differences in these protocols varying widely†(Samovar 2017 p. 343).  This is important for human service organizations because it builds relationships and collaborations amongst other organizations, communities, and individuals.Â
An example of an academic source that presents a study of cultural context would be counselors are “being mandated to enhance awareness, knowledge, and skills in working with diverse racial and ethnic groups during disaster mental health response in the U.S†(Stebnicki, 2016, p. 89).
