Requirements:
During this course, you have learned about best practices when it comes to presenting a speech. Before your larger speech, you will conduct an out of class speech observation.  Instead of physically attending a speaking event, you are going to critique and evaluate a TED Talk speaker of your choosing. TED Talk topics cover a range of interests and you are sure to find one you connect with; however, the video must be at least 12 minutes long (ideally about 20 minutes). Written Assignment Criteria
In this essay you have three objectives:

Introduce the essay in a creative way while previewing your upcoming points of critique.
Select at least three aspects of the speaking event that you found most meaningful and strongly connected to our course content.

Below is a list, although not comprehensive, that you may use to guide your critique:

Define, justify, and critique each of the three aspects you selected using evidence from our course text.
At a minimum, you need to cite the course textbook as your form of evidence. 

Describe the meaningfulness of this experience as it relates to your own public speaking knowledge and skill development. In other words, what will you do similarly and/or differently in your future presentations based on this experience?

Guiding Questions/Ideas

How did the speaker gain audience attention? Was it effective?
How did the speaker make his or her topic relevant to the audience?
How did the speaker establish his or her credibility?
Describe and analyze the purpose of the speech.
Examine the type of visual aid that was used. 
Describe the types of support used by the speaker. How, if at all, were they effective?
Analyze the speaker’s verbal and nonverbal delivery.
Describe the speaker’s use of language. Include such details as word choice, articulation, etc.
What was your overall reaction to the speech?
What was the audience’s reaction?
How, if at all, did this experience improve your personal presentational speaking skills?

Worse still, this comes on the heels of another high profile documentary exposing the environmental issues in cotton production. The company sources cotton from both India and China. Corporate management is coming under intense international pressure as well as from the US press, public, environmentalists, shareholders and the board of directors. The CEO is looking to you to: Get a policy statement out fast and identify the demonstrable actions you will be taking to remedy the situation. The statement should address the company’s commitment to civic and social responsibility in all the countries and communities in which it operates (China, India and the US). (RAA Excellence System Mastery Level Civic & Social Responsibility) You’ve also been asked to provide examples of country-specific and culturally sensitive initiatives that the company will be taking to remedy the situation and improve the company’s image in the eyes of its international stakeholders. (RAA Excellence System Mastery Level Global and Intercultural Competence) …No pressure, but you’ve got to get this done in time for the international press conference scheduled later this week. Submit as a Press Release that will be distributed at the press conference for immediate release. Note: You may have to do background research to complete this assignment. You should expect to include 3-4 cited and referenced sources.

For this week, we will look at the Byzantine (Eastern Roman) Empire and the Islamic Empires. Read chapter seven in the text  to get started.  

Option A: For option A you will be investigating the Byzantine Empire.  (Links to an external site.)(Eastern Roman Empire).  Read chapter seven in our book and the information at the included web sites below.  What were the outstanding accomplishments of the Byzantine empire (Links to an external site.) under Justinian and Theodora’s (Links to an external site.) rule? What was Theodora’s role in the governance of Constantinople? What was unusual about her role, for the time? In what ways did they preserve the culture of the Roman Empire and help solidify the importance and expansion of Christianity? Don’t forget to respond to one peer. 
Option B: This week we turn our attention to the development and expansion of lslam. (Links to an external site.) I am limiting sources because in the modern world there are so many anti-Islam sites that spread disinformation. I want you to get historical facts. Islam is not a monolithic religion. Under the umbrella of “Islam” are numerous cultural practices and political ideologies that are at odds with each other, as is sometimes the case with Shia and Sunni Islam or   (Links to an external site.)Sufi Islamic mysticism.  (Links to an external site.)Let’s be scholars and really learn so we can understand – just as we did with our other religions and locations. Summarize the rise and main features of Islam.  Then, survey the expansion of Islam -what territories did it include and what were some of the reasons for its amazing success?  Who were the Shi’ites and the Sunnis?  What main issues divided them?  What about Sufi Muslims – what do they believe and practice? Please don’t forget to respond to someone.

For each prompt you may use one of the following religions: Santería , Haitian Vodou, Obeah/Myal, Candomblé , Rastafari, Espiritismo. Each of the prompts in this assignment requires students describe the multiple aspects of global/cultural systems in order to provide the audience with information about that religion. Additionally, the prompts require student’s self-awareness as they explore their worldview and how it is shaped by their personal values, identity, cultural rules and biases so they are able to help the audience be self-aware and relate to the religions more objectively.
Human Rights Advisory Presentation (power point or short 2-4 pg paper) – This prompt should be modeled as though you were giving a talk to the Human Rights Advisory. You need to make sure you are clear about the social issue and how it relates to this audience.
You will be speaking to the Human Rights Advisory about Religion X and their stand on Social Issue X. You must include in your presentation why their values, beliefs, and culture are incorporated into their stand on Social Issue X and why it is significant to Religion X.
This assignment makes students critically analyze the way society perceives the Afro-Caribbean Religions and the impact that stigmatization has on practitioners. Each of the five prompts encourages students to step out of their comfort zone and attempt to describe the beliefs, values, cultural understanding of one of the religions from the course. The assignment inherently incorporates the SLOs.
The GCP Assignment will be graded based on the student’s ability to describe the multiple aspects of the religion chosen for the prompt, global and cultural. The information should briefly include the way the religion is situated in the larger history of the slave trade and African Diaspora. Additionally, students should approach the religion and topic with respect and objectivity. This demonstrates the student has reflected on their own beliefs, values, cultural rules and biases and are prepared to discuss another religion without dismissal.
