For the Researched Argument Essay, you are going to construct an audience-based argument that presents a specific claim about your topic and integrates the research you have done this semester to support your claim. Your thesis statement should propose a solution or solutions to a particular problem. as well as tell the reader WHY this is the best/most feasible course of action and/or HOW this course of action could/should be implemented. 
Think carefully about your readers. Consider these five questions:

What do you want readers to do or think?
Why should they do or think that?
How do they know that what you say is true?
What should readers know about counterarguments?
What larger principles or context grounds your argument?

Also, think about the stakeholders involved in your topic. Who is most impacted? Most invested? Who can be the agents of change? Who is in the most powerful position to effect change? Note: stakeholders and agents of change are not always the same group of people. 
Writing an audience-based argument means thinking about your goals. What do you want the audience to do, think, or feel? What action do you think they need to take (if applicable)? In some cases, your audience may be large entities, such as corporations or governments, so you should set proportionate goals for your audience.
Whatever your goal for your audience, you must choose and evaluate evidence accordingly. What evidence does the audience need? To what would they respond best? What most aligns with their own goals and agendas? Here, a careful consideration of ethos, pathos, and logos is critical. How are you going to appeal to your reader in a way that persuades them to proceed according to your recommendations?

1- This short story by Lois McMaster Bujold is part of a long series about Miles Vorkosigan, his family, and interstellar politics. To give you the context for this story, Miles was born with two conditions (dwarfism and weak bones) on a planet (Barrayar) that abhors any kind of physical abnormality as a sign of radiation-caused mutation (the whole planet had been nuclear bombed by the Cetagandan Empire about a century earlier). Nevertheless, Miles’s parents encourage him to follow his dreams, which for him means joining the military space force. At the time of the story, Miles sometimes serves as a regular officer and sometimes goes undercover as the leader of a mercenary space fleet that is sometimes “hired” by the Barrayaran secret service to carry out missions that the planet can’t be seen to meddle in. In this case, Miles and the mercenaries have been hired by the Marilacan resistance (whose planet has been invaded by Cetaganda) to rescue a leader from a prison camp. Things get complicated, as they always do in a story about Miles. (And there’s a final point that comes up in a later book, that I’ll tell you about in the discussion after everyone’s read the story.)
For this discussion, think about the ethical issues that Miles faces in the story. Choose one, and write about what the issue is, why it’s not a simple yes/no decision, and whether you think Miles made the right decision, and why. In the ‘70s, many of us in operations management foresaw the day when our factories would become dark, meaning that lights were no longer needed as human labor was replaced by automation/robotics. Certainly there are many factories that approach this today.  We are seeing a similar shift in agriculture and the service industries. Homes and hotels are being printed with 3-D printers.  For instance, in agriculture over the last couple of hundred years we have shifted from the majority of the population being directly involved in food production to a very small percentage.  Unless some major disturbance occurs, the trend will continue. At some point, be it 20, 30 or 50 years from now, only a very small percentage of the world population will be required in the production of  all the food, devices, products, shelter, clothing, clean water and energy that the global population needs.
