One common workplace writing genre you will use in the future is the personal self-reflection or evaluation. Most likely, you will use this type of argument during workplace performance reviews, when you ask for a raise or a benefit, or any time your employer or others need to have written evidence of accountability for your progress. Here is a brief reading (Links to an external site.) to explain the process and a worksheet (Links to an external site.) to get you started. As a way to practice this type of workplace writing, your last assignment of the semester will be to review your performance in terms of the course objectives. In order to write a successful Performance Review, you will need to use the following strategies:Review the course objectives from the syllabus. What do you feel you have achieved? Can you find concrete evidence of this through your work? Looking back at your process work, class discussions, and major projects may prove helpful.Demonstrate how your efforts this quarter have been aligned with the course objectives.Review the stages you went through to create documents for the course.Compare older drafts to newer drafts. What did you learn from peer review comments? What did you learn from the revision process? You should quote or paraphrase examples from your work. Was your time used wisely? How might you improve for future workplace writing projects?A performance review should remain upbeat. However, overly positive reviews show a lack of reflection and potential delusion on the part of the writer. What did you struggle with in learning to write for the workplace? How have you overcome these difficulties? What evidence of overcoming these difficulties can you show from your work? What areas of writing or collaboration do you still need to work on? Evidence?Keep audience-based reasoning in mind. What does your professor or “supervisor” value and care about? What arguments should you stay away from because they are not audience-based?SubmissionYou should format your performance review as a memo addressed to Professor Wilson. The memo should be 2-3 pages, 1” margins, single-spaced, with headings. You are encouraged to use tables, charts, and before/after photos of your design work. Do not use underline and do not submit the memo in question-answer format — you should be using more advanced document design skills at this point.

solved Case Scenario: John Smithers learned all about leadership in the

Case Scenario:
John Smithers learned all about leadership in the military, and he is hoping to apply those skills to running John’s Deals to Go, his small automobile-leasing company. One interesting feature of life in the armed services is that considerable responsibilities are delegated to young men and women who have very little work experience. Smithers was only 27 when he was assigned duties as a purchasing manager at Kandahar Airport, Afghanistan, in 2003. As a young Marine, he was directly responsible for nearly $50 million in purchasing contracts, which forced him to grow up—and really fast!
To parallel his military experience, Smithers and his small management team have decided to use various methods to delegate decision making to employees at the operating level in his company. New employees are trained thoroughly after they are first hired, but supervisors will not monitor their work closely once they have learned their duties. Management is willing to jump in and help if truly needed, but they purposely leave workers alone when they take on their assigned duties. Managers will not look over employees’ shoulders to be sure that they are doing their jobs as assigned, and they certainly do not monitor the work just to try to catch someone making a mistake. Smithers’s managerial philosophy is that people work best when they sense that their superiors trust their abilities and their business integrity.
Smithers and his team sometimes leave for day-long meetings and allow the employees to run the business by themselves. Job assignments are defined rather loosely, but management expects employees to assume responsibility and to take necessary action whenever they see that something needs to be done. To reinforce the message of trust, employees who ask for direction are sometimes simply told to solve the problem in whatever way they think best.
Address the case scenario by applying the information learned in Lesson 6 and the related chapters in your textbooks. Answer the following questions in a well written essay.

Is such a loosely organized firm likely to be as effective as a firm that defines jobs more precisely and monitors performance more closely?
What are the advantages and the limitations of the managerial style described above?
How might such managerial methods affect morale?
Would you like to work for this company? Why or why not?

Write a statement giving essential information about the book: title, author, first copyright date, type of book, general subject matter, special features (maps, color plates, etc.), price and ISBN.
State the author’s purpose in writing the book. Sometimes authors state their purpose in the preface or the first chapter. When they do not, you may arrive at an understanding of the book’s purpose by asking yourself the following questions:? Why did the author write about this subject rather than on some other subject? b. From what point of view is the work written??c. Was the author trying to give information, to explain something technical, to convince the reader of a belief’s validity by dramatizing it in action??d. What is the general field or genre, and how does the book fit into it? (Use outside sources to familiarize yourself with the field, if necessary.) Knowledge of the genre means understanding the art form. and how it functions.?e. Who is the intended audience??f. What is the author’s style? Is it formal or informal? Evaluate the quality of the writing style by using some of the following standards: coherence, clarity, originality, forcefulness, correct use of technical words, conciseness, fullness of development, fluidity. Does it suit the intended audience??g. Scan the Table of Contents, it can help understand how the book is organized and will aid in determining the author’s main ideas and how they are developed – chronologically, topically, etc. g. How did the book affect you? Were any previous ideas you had on the subject changed, abandoned, or reinforced due to this book? How is the book related to your own course or personal agenda? What personal experiences you’ve had relate to the subject??h. How well has the book achieved its goal??i. Would you recommend this book or article to others? Why?
State the theme and the thesis of the book.
Theme: The theme is the subject or topic. It is not necessarily the title, and it is usually not expressed in a complete sentence. It expresses a specific phase of the general subject matter.?b. Thesis: The thesis is an author’s generalization about the theme, the author’s beliefs about something important, the book’s philosophical conclusion, or the proposition the author means to prove. Express it without metaphor or other figurative language, in one declarative sentence. Example:

The paper is on algorithms and how they negatively effect people on social media. The first page or so should explain what algorithms on social media are and how they work and then the paper should discuss how algorithms negatively effect people (An example might be algorithms put people in a box because they only get surrounded by the content they like. An example of this is if a user is depressed and the user likes Tweets or posts that are depressing more content of that nature will pop up onto that user’s feed and will make the user even more depressed).

Causes and Effects of Urbanization
Brian Gabriel – June 27, 2018
Urbanization is the shift from a rural to an urban society, bringing a large concentration of people into towns and cities. This process usually occurs when a nation is still developing. The trend toward urbanization is a worldwide phenomenon. The chief cause of global urbanization is the new economic opportunities it brings to people and governments; however, it has both positive and negative effects on society.
Workers move to urban centres to find better economic opportunities. The Industrial Revolution and the subsequent shift from agricultural jobs to factory jobs made it profitable for companies to locate their factories in large cities with plenty of local workers. There often is a severe lack of resources in rural areas, such as medical technology, which further drives people to the cities. In developing countries, such as those in Africa, natural population increases and migration have been big factors in urbanization. People are driven out of rural poverty and into urban areas as they are less able to care for their growing families; cities offer employment, food, shelter and education.
Urbanization has many adverse effects on the structure of society as gigantic concentrations of people compete for limited resources. Rapid housing construction leads to overcrowding and slums, which experience major problems such as poverty, poor sanitation, unemployment and high crime rates. Additionally, strains on important natural resources, such as water supply, leads to higher prices and general environmental sustainability problems.
Another effect of urbanization is urban sprawl. Urban sprawl is when the population of a city becomes dispersed over an increasingly large geographical area. This movement from higher density urban cores to lower density suburbs means that as cities expand, they often begin to take up significant tracts of land formerly used for agriculture. Sprawl also increases the need for travel infrastructure, such as roads, because people’s homes are likely to be farther away from where they work and the amenities they enjoy.
