1) First, summarize Cathy O’Neil’s argument from her first chapter. Strong and effective summaries will be concise and accurate. Imagine that your reader is somewhat familiar with O’Neil’s work, but needs a good reminder of her main points.
2) Then, summarize one example of the algorithms or technologies we’ve read about so far. Imagine that as readers we are not familiar with that particular example. We need to know – what is the algorithm or technology? What problem is it supposed to solve? Why? What reasoning, if any is available, do the creators offer?
3) Finally, evaluate the example. By evaluate, I mean that you should make an informed judgment about it. Is it a strong idea? Based on what you have read and what we have discussed in class, will it totally solve the problem? Will it partially solve the problem? Will it do more harm than good? Or does it have strengths and weaknesses? Offer some reasoning for why you have come to this judgment.
