As such, sexual violence has grown to be one of the most significant problems faced by college stakeholders (college management, students, and parents/community). It is estimated that 19-25% of female students experience various forms of sexual violence while in college. As a result of this devastating life experience, such students have difficulty adjusting in their lives and, as such, suffer from eating disorders, may use drugs and alcohol as a coping mechanism (Jouriles et al., 2016). While it is mostly women who report cases of sexual violence, young men are equal victims. Due to social stigma and misinformation, most people believe that men cannot experience sexual violence, preventing male victims from seeking justice. As such, such cases become unreported and, therefore, undocumented. For instance, a study conducted by Sumner et al., which sought to investigate the extent to which males and females report incidences of sexual violence, found that only 10% of males report violence, unlike 25% of women (2015). Further to this, transgender men and women are 32% more likely to experience sexual violence, often as a way of punishing them for their gender identity (Peitzmeier et al., 2015). Therefore, there is a greater call to action to identify, implement, and report interventions that can help reduce incidences of sexual violence on campuses and colleges.Assessment of existing interventions on sexual violenceMost colleges and campuses have made intentional efforts to develop programs to address and help lower the rates of sexual violence to promote all college students’ wellbeing. Awareness programs and therapy-based approaches are some of the most common intervention programs to address sexual violence on campus. Most of these programs are known as bystander programs, which aim to change students’ attitudes and beliefs and, most importantly, bystander behavior of community members. Such programs aim to provide students with the skills and boundaries in situations of sexual assault and abusive relationships (Jouriles et al., 2016).Existing gaps in bystander programsStudies show that bystander programs are useful to a great extent in achieving behavior change in sexual violence. For instance, when a bystander program was rolled out in a college, most of the program participants made deliberate efforts to protect their friends within two months of the intervention (Jouriles et al., 2016). While the impact achieved in such programs is relevant in solving this vice, there is a need for a more holistic intervention program that targets college and university students and involves family members and other students in lower and middle educational institutions. Current gaps in bystander programs include it focusing mainly on colleges and universities. At the same time, other students also experience sexual violence at home, and younger students, for instance, may not be aware of what sexual violence is, thus increasing their vulnerability to abuse.THRIVE Wellness programTo address these gaps to promote an environment where students in different levels are empowered with knowledge and skills on sexual violence, I propose the THRIVE wellness program. Before initiating the program, a series of focus group discussions and in-depth interviews will be conducted with parents, teachers, and students. These interviews will obtain information on the relevance of such a program, existing challenges with sexual violence interventions, and the level of awareness of the various forms of sexual violence prevalent. All this information will be relevant in highlighting the current realities of students and their parents. Therefore, the program will be developed to respond to the gaps identified from the focus group discussions and interviews.This awareness program will provide children and young adults and their families and other stakeholders in the education industry with knowledge of sexual violence. The program will entail a 360-degree curriculum that sexual rights groups and experts will specially develop. The curriculum will entail two key modules for teachers/parents and the other for students. The student curriculum will be split into three middle, high, and college levels, in which the level of detail will depend on the student’s level.The parent/teacher module will include a mini-documentary to empower parents and teachers with knowledge about sexual violence and the reality that most cases of sexual violence among children are experienced within the home environment. A study in sexual violence prevalence at home found that 29% of children report sexual violence experiences at home but do not report due to power dynamics (Jamieson, Mathews & Röhrs, 2018). To respond to these gaps, this module will provide a space for older persons to identify and discuss topics that are generally considered taboo with their children.The program will entail a written syllabus and mini-documentary highlighting different elements of sexual violence. The syllabus will also contain follow-up information and guiding questions on sexual violence. The syllabus will be developed using simple and easy to understand language across the participating demographic. The kit will be issued to parents and teachers. At the same time, the students will participate in the program through group activities at school and have mandatory conversations about their understanding and experiences with sexual violence with their parents and guardians after watching the mini-documentary. In the school environment, the students will use the written syllabus to expand their awareness of sexual violence. Due to the sensitive nature of the conversations among students and parents who have previously experienced sexual violence, the program will partner with local psychologists to provide mental health support to individuals and families experiencing emotional trauma from the conversations.To make publicIn turn, the mini-documentary will be an online campaign on various social media platforms, among them YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram. Assignment: Locate a theme in the novel and argue for what position you believe Austen is taking on that theme. Support your claim with quotations from the novel and close reading of those quotations. Cite your quotations correctly both in-text and in a Works Cited page. See the Format and Documentation handout for how to do this and how to format the paper generally (header, etc.).
Writing the thesis:
1. Pick a theme: A theme is a novel-wide issue that comes up repeatedly. You may wish to consider some of the issues that we have talked about throughout our discussion, like the marriage plot, gender, the limitations of the early (women’s) novel, social class, and so on. These things are themes. Themes can be narrowed–made more specific– often to the benefit of papers.
2. Determine what position you think Austen took on the theme, overall, in her novel. The idea is that authors don’t just “talk about” social class or sex or race in their novels; they have opinions about those things, and they use their novels to forward those opinions. What overall position on your chosen theme does Austen use her novel to express?
3. Name the novel and name the author.
4. Keep the thesis one sentence only, and make sure it is as precise and concise as possible. Theses are contracts with the reader. In them, you promise your reader what your paper will perform, so you want to make sure it lays out precisely what you’re going to do.
Sample Thesis: In Pride and Prejudice, Austen criticizes Regency class stratification by writing a novel whose happy ending requires a class intermingling portrayed as pure fantasy. Structure: Structure your essay by topic sentences (TS). Topic sentences are advantageous because they
1) Tell the reader what the point of the following paragraph or paragraphs is, and
2) How that point ties to the thesis
3) In addition, they make you consider what organization is best, so that you’re not just putting things down as they occur to you, in random order, but actually thinking about the structure of the essay as an essential part of its success.
Topic sentence hints: 1) If you can’t write them, it’s because you don’t know what the point and function of the section is. If you don’t know, how will I know?
2) Consider if the problem is that you have too many ideas bundled together into one section, ideas that need to be separated out into their own defined TS. 2
3) TS are required, not optional
Analysis: The bulk of the paper will be literary analysis. Since I’m not letting you use any sources (other than the dictionaries), all you have as evidence is quotation from Pride and Prejudice and close reading of those quotations in which you show how the language of the novel, properly analyzed, supports your thesis.
Close reading hints: 1) We have been doing close reading all term, literally since day one on “Ozymandias,” so don’t panic. You do know how to do this. I’m just asking you to write down what we’ve been doing, orally, all term.
2) In a good close reading, the critic (that’s you!) shows that there’s more at work in the language than appears on the obvious level. This is a matter of getting inside the language through such things as checking the particularly important-seeming words in the OED and Green’s to see if there are any interesting definitions that might open up the quotations in new ways (remember how “Ozymandias” opened up in totally new ways when we realized all the things the words in line eight could mean?). It can also mean paying attention to things like sentence structure and punctuation—these things are analyzable. So, too, is the narrative voice. Who’s narrating? How? What’s the effect of that? There are many things a critic can consider to move beyond the literal level.
3) Be judicious in your use of the dictionaries. There is no point in using a definition that is the overt definition. That doesn’t add anything since you’re not deepening our understanding of the novel’s language. Be careful, too, not to over-rely on the dictionaries. Look up key words, not every word. Papers bogged down with definitions become cumbersome.
4) For examples of close reading do’s and don’t’s see the Close Reading Handout. Introduction: Your introduction should offer the context for your thesis, preparing your reader for the argument you’re about to make. For instance, let’s reconsider the sample thesis I gave above: In Pride and Prejudice, Austen criticizes Regency class stratification by writing a novel whose happy ending requires a class intermingling portrayed as pure fantasy. I can’t just drop that on readers without preparing them. Readers will have no idea what the Regency notion of “class” was, so they will have no idea what issue I’m saying Austen’s tackling. My introduction, then, might usefully give a brief introduction of Regency social class boundaries. Then, I can present my thesis, and the reader will know what I’m talking about.
Introduction Hints: 1) In a paper of this length, keep the intro to one paragraph unless there’s a burning reason to exceed that.
2) Don’t include close reading in the introduction. Since you haven’t established your argument yet, we won’t know how to interpret it. 3) Don’t begin with a dictionary definition unless you need one.
4) Don’t begin with biographical or historical information unless you need it. If you do need it, that’s fine.
5) Don’t begin with praise of the author or work (ever).
6) Don’t begin by discussing the process of writing the paper (ever).
7) Place your thesis as the last sentence of your introductory paragraph (there are other options, but this will help me locate it). Do not italicize it, bold it, or do anything else to distinguish it from the rest of the paragraph. Conclusion: Your conclusion should offer your readers a way to make sense of the entire argument that you’ve just written. To return to my thesis, imagine my readers reading my paper and saying, “Okay I get that Austen offers this criticism of class leveling as an unattainable fantasy, but so what? What does that tell me?” In my case, I might use my conclusion to explore the significance of my argument for an understanding of Austen as an “apolitical author,” a charge that has been often leveled against her.
Conclusion Hints: 1. In a paper of this length, there is no need for the conclusion to exceed one paragraph.
2. Don’t summarize the paper! I’m old, but I remember what I just read.
3. Don’t include praise of the author or work (ever).
4. Don’t end with rhetorical questions (questions not designed to be answered), like “When we will finally address the sexism in our society?”
5. Don’t end with grand rhetorical flourishes that sound important but … aren’t. This is what I call the “We are Woman/God bless America” conclusions.
Title: Your title should communicate your specific argument to the reader, as well as what text you’re working on. Since everyone knows who wrote Pride and Prejudice, it is permissible to leave Austen’s name out of the title. There are multiple ways of doing this, but one is to open with a quotation from the novel that is key to your interpretation, either one you use in the paper or one that you wanted to—edited for brevity—and then follow with a phrase that encapsulates your thesis and names the novel.

I would like to have asked Poe where is inspiration came from or  was it a little of mental illness that he embraced to help him with his  work?  
 
3.Upon what occasions might one still make use of Bartleby’s response, “I prefer not to”?   
 
Bartleby’s “I prefer not to”, reminds me of something that I wish I  could say most days. To me it personifies the feeling of having the  power to say no. It was just a nicer way of saying no. The word “prefer”  is very interesting to have been chosen. I think most people would have  said “I don’t want to” or just “no”. I think the power in the statement  comes from the fact that there is a choice. It is saying “I choose not  to”. The occasions that the statement, “I prefer not to”, would be at  any time a person is presented with a situation where they don’t want to  participate in an action.   
 
4.Does Whitman fulfill his promise that he will show his readers  the origin of poems, and if so, where do you locate this “origin”?  
 
I believe that Whitman does fulfill his promise. Even though he  doesn’t straight say “this is the origin”, he instead describes the  origin of poems with every line that is written in “Song of Myself”. The  origin of poems comes from life, our experiences, dreams, heartaches,  from nature, and everything else around us.

1.)  After reviewing Don Melander’s lecture video 2 in this week’s curriculum, one of the questions that comes to mind is:

Why did artists and poets who  practiced the belief systems of “symbolism” “nature” as well as  “transcendentalism” recieve more recognition than “romanticistic”  writers and artist such as William Blake in the 1700 to 1800’s?
2.) One of the most relevant  questions that comes to mind after reviewing week two’s lecture video as  well as the readings involves “transcendentalism” “symbolism’ as well  as “romanticism” Hence:
Why, is humanity still struggling  with the same debates and controversies regarding religious and  scientific practices and/or beleif systems in which have occured for  centuries with no real resolutions up to this point in time? Hence,  think of all the unnecessary wars in which have been fought in the name  religion. 
3.) In reference to Herman  Melvine’s story, “Bartleby, The Scrivener,” and his renowned quote that  states, “I perfer not to,”  one might utilze this term today by  exercising personal boundaries and/or on a more dramatic scale, exercise  their Constitutional Right’s.  In Melvine’s story, Bartleby’s character  uses this four letter term throughput the storyline to politely refuse  to go “above and beyond” what  is required of him in the office.  Therefore, when the word “prefer” is magnified under the looking glass  of the reader, it leaves the suggestion more “open” without an  “absolute” refusal to adhere to his boss’s directives. It is fair to say  that if the average person in today’s society responded to a superior  with Bartleby’s attitude of, “I prefer not to,” they would more than  likely be terminated from further employment within the company.
4.) Is it fair to say that renowned  poet and writer, Walt Whitman was stereotypical on behalf of race?  Hence, as a democratic, white man, the book states that Whitman  justified the Mexican War by, “Peopling the New World with a noble  race.”  Norton Anthology of American Literature (Levine) p 1071 (2017).  Although, Whitman seemed to have delivered his promise that he would  show the readers the orgin of his poems and he di introduce a unique  style of writing in the use of “catalogs” in which were “encyclopedic”  as well as “journalistic” in his “Preface Leaves to Grass” it appears to  me that Whitman clearly delivers the orgin of poems to only one such  race; that of whote descendants.  A brilliant poet was he, yet , perhaps  his idea of the “American Dream”was sadly limmited by the deliverance  of one race. Hence, he writes about “survival of the fittest”  in the  beginning of the preface of, “To leaves of grass,” he adds, “America  does not repel the past or what it has produced….under its forms or  amid politics….or idea of castes or the old religions….accepts the  lessons with calmness….is not soimpatient as has been supposed….that  the slough still sticks to opinions and manners and literature while  the life whihc served its requirements has passed intio the new lifeof  new forms….percieves that the corpse is slowly borne from the eating  and sleeping rooms of the house….percieves that it was a little while  in the door….that it was fittest for days….that its action has  descended to the stalwart and well shaped heir who appraoches….and he  shall be fittest for ddays.” Perhaps Whitman delivered his orgin of  poems in the sense of creativity, however in a very narrow-minded way,  at least in my opinion. Hence, American History was founded on  white-supremacy, sadly. Hwever, Whitman did introduce “free-verse”  and “poetic expression.”
