This was unacceptable to me because normally a new employee’s email would have been created in several days. However, I continued to interact with our IT department until they finally created the account for my employee. In another instance, shortly after being assigned to my current office, I learned that most of my employees had chronic latency issues with their reporting. Some of these reports were over a month late. These employees just weren’t writing their reports. This systematic lateness was an adaptive challenge and one that required immediate attention. To be fair to my employees, their reports sometimes sat without being published for weeks after being written. Working with my supervisor, I was able to ensure that I had release authority for the reports of my employees. Meanwhile, I had a long conversation with my new employees about the need for everyone to do their part. I explained that our headquarters was very concerned about timely reporting and that we needed to adhere to the standard reporting timelines which were uniformly applied across our organization. I also addressed the fact that sometimes their reports went unpublished for weeks and told them that I wouldn’t fault them for circumstances beyond their control and explained that I would be the one to release their reports in the future and that I would bear the full responsibility for any reports that were not released once they had submitted them to me. My only condition was that they provided me with satisfactory reports. In other words, I implored my personnel to make it a priority to write their reports on time and affirmed that my priority would be reviewing and releasing those reports as quickly as possible. Within one month, we reduced late reporting by over 80 percent. I’ve always found report writing to be a monotonous and thankless task. However, it is something that our agency stresses and places a tremendous value on. The good news for me and my employees was that once we got our latency issues in check, our headquarters left us alone which allowed me to provide my personnel with more autonomy, improving their morale considerably. It looks and needs an out of the box thinking in order to succeed. A leader engages his or her staff and outside opinion in discussion on the problems and how to fix them, incorporating multiple layer approaches and not being afraid to expose the business or entity to external pressures. In fact, the point is to challenge norms and set processes and ideas which not are productive but resistant to change. A leader steps back and lets his or her staff provide solutions and new standing operating procedures. For an example, in my previous job in the Foreign Service, I served as a Consular Officer in Saudi Arabia; we had a program in which other sections would provide referrals for foreign nationals- often important contacts or sources of information- and give the foreign national an expedited visa appointment. When I arrive it was very chaotic, anyone could walk into the section during the day and drop off the required information, usually not done correctly or within the required timeframe. It was very distracting and time consuming. After I had been at post for seven months and assumed the responsibility to oversee this program, I conferred with my local staff chief who had fifteen years’ experience in her job and other sections on their referrals and why they made them and then made recommendations to my boss on how to improve the process. We changed how we did referrals, only accepting them at certain times of the day and week, and only American staff could drop them off. It improved efficiency and reduced the number of referrals we had to do. Morale in the section improved, and we reduced any possible fraud or national security concerns. Second, a technical leadership style takes a more routine approach. One attempts to understand the mission and personnel and any issues and problems, then seeks to make recommends within the given policies or orders already established. One might make changes if necessary, but the burden is placed on the leader to absorb information and then define expectations and the mission and expects staff to carry those orders out. As an example, when I was an Intelligence Instructor at Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron One (MAWTS-1), my commanding officer (CO) wanted to change our entire scenario which we used as the backdrop for the twice-held Weapons and Instructor Course (WTI). The scenario had more or less been the same for a decade, concentrated on counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations. However, my CO knew that as the United States moved away from these types of missions, the focus would and should be on more conventional threats. Thus we changed the scenario to focus on operational plans (OPLANS). Since the other Intelligence Officer in my office had experience in OPLAN mission planning and execution as I did, we developed the enemy scenario and order of battle based on current intelligence and then directed our section to build the required slides, maps, and ops/ terms/ graphics to support the scenario. It required much work and focus, but the top down approach worked very well in this example as we had a very short timeline to develop our plans, receive the go ahead from the CO, and then make all the preparations for the next class. #1 Fortified Palaces for a Hostile World
In contrast to the Minoans, whose sprawling palaces ( FIGS. 4-4 and 4-5 ) were unprotected by enclosing walls, the Mycenaeans were fearsome warriors who inhabited a hostile world. The palatial administrative centers of their Cretan predecessors did not provide useful models for royal residences on the mainland. Consequently, the Mycenaeans had to develop an independent solution for housing—and protecting—their kings and their families and attendants.
Construction of the citadels of Tiryns ( FIGS. 4-15 and 4-16 ) and Mycenae ( FIG. 4-19 ) began about 1400 bce. Both burned (along with all the other Mycenaean strongholds) between 1250 and 1200 bce when northern invaders overran the Mycenaeans, they fell victim to internal warfare, or they suffered a natural catastrophe—or a combination of these factors. Homer called Tiryns the city “of the great walls.” In the second century ce, when Pausanias, author of an invaluable Roman guidebook to Greece, visited the long-abandoned site, he marveled at the towering fortifications and considered the walls of Tiryns to be as spectacular as the pyramids of Egypt. Indeed, the Greeks of the historical age believed that mere humans could not have erected these enormous edifices. They attributed the construction of the great Mycenaean citadels to the mythical Cyclopes , a race of one-eyed giants. Architectural historians still employ the term Cyclopean masonry to refer to the huge, roughly cut stone blocks forming the massive fortification walls of Tiryns and other Mycenaean sites.
The Mycenaean engineers who designed the circuit wall of Tiryns compelled would-be attackers to approach the palace ( FIG. 4-15 ) within the walls via a long ramp that forced the soldiers (usually right-handed; compare FIG. 4-27 ) to expose their unshielded sides to the Mycenaean defenders above. Then—if they got that far—the enemy forces had to pass through a series of narrow gates that also could be defended easily.
Inside, at Tiryns as elsewhere, the most important element in the palace plan was the megaron , or reception hall and throne room, of the wanax (Mycenaean king). The main room of the megaron had a throne against the right wall and a central hearth bordered by four Minoan-style wood columns serving as supports for the roof. A vestibule with a columnar facade preceded the throne room. The remains of the megarons at Tiryns and Mycenae are scant, but at Pylos, home of Homer’s King Nestor (and the Griffin Warrior), archaeologists found sufficient evidence to enable them to visualize the original appearance of its megaron, complete with mural and ceiling paintings ( FIG. 4-18A ).
#2 White Temple, Uruk
The layout of Sumerian cities reflected the central role of the gods in daily life. The main temple to each state’s chief god was its most important structure and the city’s nucleus. In fact, the temple complex was a kind of city within a city, where a staff of priests and scribes carried on official administrative and commercial business as well as oversaw all religious functions.
The outstanding preserved example of early Sumerian temple architecture is the 5,000-year-old White Temple ( FIGS. 2-2 and 2-3 ) at Uruk, a city that in the late fourth millennium bce was about 500 acres in size and had a population of about 40,000. Usually only the foundations of early Mesopotamian temples remain. The White Temple is a rare exception. Sumerian builders did not have easy access to stone quarries and instead formed mud bricks for the superstructures of their temples and other buildings. Mud brick is a durable building material, but unlike stone, it deteriorates with exposure to water. Almost all the Sumerian mud-brick structures have eroded over the course of time. The Sumerians nonetheless erected towering works, such as the Uruk temple, several centuries before the Egyptians built their famous stone pyramids. The construction of grandiose shrines when stone was unavailable says a great deal about the Sumerians’ desire to provide inspiring settings for the worship of their deities.
Enough of the White Temple at Uruk remains to permit a fairly reliable reconstruction ( FIG. 2-3 ). The temple (whose white gypsum-coated walls suggested its modern nickname) stands atop a lofty platform 43 feet above street level at the city’s highest point, called Kullaba. A stairway on one side leads to the top, but does not end in front of any of the temple doorways, necessitating two or three angular changes in direction. This bent-axis plan is the standard arrangement for Sumerian temples, a striking contrast to the linear approach that the Egyptians preferred for their temples and tombs (compare FIGS. 3-10 and 3-20 ).
As in other Sumerian temples, the corners of the White Temple are oriented to the cardinal points of the compass. The building, probably dedicated to Anu, the sky god, is of modest proportions (61 by 16 feet). By design, Sumerian temples did not accommodate large throngs of worshipers but only a select few, the priests and perhaps the leading community members. The White Temple had several chambers. The central hall, or cella , was the divinity’s room and housed a stepped altar. The Sumerians referred to their temples as “waiting rooms,” a reflection of their belief that the deity would descend from the heavens to appear before the priests in the cella. It is unclear whether the Uruk temple had a roof, and if it did, what kind.
The Sumerian notion of the gods residing above the world of humans is central to most of the world’s religions. Moses ascended Mount Sinai to receive the Ten Commandments from the Hebrew God, and the Greeks placed the home of their gods and goddesses on Mount Olympus. The elevated placement of Mesopotamian temples on giant platforms reaching to the sky is consistent with this widespread religious concept. The loftiness of the Sumerian temple platforms made a profound impression on the peoples of ancient Mesopotamia. The tallest, at Babylon, was about 270 feet high. Known to the Hebrews as the Tower of Babel, it became the centerpiece of a biblical story about the arrogant and disrespectful pride of humans (see “ Babylon, City of Wonders ”).

The use of faith-based ministry programs for the reintegration of offenders can be controversial because of society’s demand for the separation of church and state. However, despite this, we cannot forget the United State of America was founded on Christianity and can be seen in our Pledge of Allegiance still recited in many public schools as well as our United States Currency that state’s “In God We Trust.”
When we follow the separation of church and state, there is more flexibility amongst society with debates such as same-sex marriages and denial of birth-control to employees based on religious beliefs. Regardless of beliefs, it is obvious that many of the morals and ethics the law follows are very similar to the bible, so finding a strong difference between morality and politics is difficult (Hull & Edgell, 2021) as they overlap in so many ways.
Religion is often looked at traditionally as a personal experience that individuals often seek out when they are ready to find meaning in their life and make positive life changes. Research shows that people in prisons often face an array of feelings to include guilt and shame and are often ready to make a change in themselves with religion as their spiritual guide (Stansfield & Mowen, 2019).
Those who oppose prison ministries often cite it is simply unfair, as it can be viewed as pushing a specific religious belief on someone without any choice, feeling pressured to participate in order to receive special treatments or benefits (Hull & Edgell, 2021). As an example, in a recent article, a person of Jewish faith may feel they will receive extra assistance if they participate in a Christian based prison program (Hull & Edgell, 2021). Those who also oppose this type of religious framework in prisons will argue it is also unfair for the government to be participating with taxpayer monies assisting with any sort of religious funding, as it is a direct violation of church and state.
Regarding those who support the prison ministry programs, the argument is these programs focus more on morals and ensure the programs in place are there not for profit but for assistance for those who need it the most. If others do not intervene and assist, such as volunteers in Christian based prison programs, the offender may likely not get the help they need. Many advocates also look at this to at least try to better the person by giving them the choice to have an open-mind and better themselves (Hull & Edgell, 2021). Having inmates and parolees participate in an open volunteer program, that is not required, is why many of the Christian based ministry programs can be allowed as they are not mandated. Overall, it appears there is a direct link of lower recidivism when a faith-based program is involved with those who are incarcerated or on parole. Specifically, it does not appear if the person was a practicing Christian before entering that their religion alone lowered recidivism. Therefore, it can be concluded the programs offered in prisons by faith-based facilities, to include job re-entry programs and career enhancement skills, are imperative to help society by helping those who are reintegrating after being imprisoned (Stansfield & Mowen, 2019). Often when people are seeking religious guidance it is not necessarily for “finding God” but as a means of social and community-level support, working together with others.
It would only make sense for faith-based religious programs to be available as an option, as it is only realistic for a future employer to be hesitant to hire someone who was just incarcerated. As an example, if someone served time for too many thefts, how would an employer possibly feel comfortable trusting this person knowing they have a history of theft? It is religious organizations that can help with this dilemma and bring resources to those who have been imprisoned by incorporating an ethical guide specific to the bible and the word of God. A second chance is something a Christian truly supports, as it is the way God wants us to live . As stated in Micah 7:18, “Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy” (New International Version, 2011). When these faith-based organizations intervene and assist, there are more positive outcomes for everyone.

It has been well researched that the integration of faith based organizations and encouraging offenders to look into their own spirituality and commit time and effort into exploring their own spirituality is an important intervention when it comes to rehabilitating the offender (Milakovich & Gordon, 2013). It is important to look into interventions that work and research has strongly suggested that religious intervention leads to lower rearrest rates (Milakovich & Gordon, 2013). Prison fellowship programs are widely accessible throughout the country and exist in almost every state and federal prison. This low cost, easily accessible intervention should be built upon to further the offender’s participation. Every week we have learned of one way to make rehabilitation more of a reality for the offender, however it is learning how to make these programs more appealing to encourage participation. It is important that these offenders be exposed to the word of God and understand his forgiveness and love before they are released into society. The use of a good mentor is one of the best ways to achieve this.
One study I found to be most interesting took place in Indiana through the use of 40 mentors who volunteered their time and energy to rehabilitating offenders through faith based programs. It accounted for the mentors’ motivations in effort to understand how to make faith based reintegration programs work. Stacer and Roberts(2018) wanted to understand how good mentors affect the way these offenders are rehabilitated. She identified that the mentors that were connected to churches who would be accepting of offenders in order to help set the offenders up with communities that would be understanding and not ostracize these individuals (Stacer & Roberts, 2018). Six of the mentors were offenders in the past, nine had a family member who was an offender, and the others had no connection to the criminal justice system (Stacer & Roberts, 2018). After six months of mentoring the mentors reported feelings of appreciation for their life, were more aware of the struggles offenders have with the rehabilitation process, and why they offend (Stacer, 2018). I felt this study was important because it showed that volunteering to work with former offenders is an important job and can be rewarding to communities.
