Quality in health care refers to the act of providing care to the patient safely and effectively. Quality of care and patient safety go together; you can’t have one without the other. When nurses are listened to, supported, and their concerns acknowledged, they will strive to provide the safest, quality patient care. In 1999, The Institute of Medicine (IOM) concluded into Err Is Human that nurse work environments were needed to reduce patient harm (Resnick 2019). The report provided promising evidence-based strategies to improve patient safety, such as nurses’ work environment and adequate staffing. The study also found that nurse staffing adequacy and work environments supporting nurses’ performance of patient monitoring and timely intervention were associated with better patient outcomes and concluded that improving care environments were fundamental to reducing patient harm. The IOM made eight key recommendations to improve care environments, creating governing boards that focus on safety, leadership and evidence-based management processes, effective nursing leadership, adequate nurse staffing, organizational support for ongoing learning and decision support, and tools that promote interprofessional collaboration (Resnick 2019).
